Rebecca Loader, Library Director SUBJECT: January operational report DATE: January 29, 2008 I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE A. Public Works moved a lot of furniture in the East Room to make room for the new compact disc shelving, which was installed 1/23. Staff is very excited to have the cd’s in call number order and to finally get rid of the old bins that used to hold the lp collection. This change will also allow the use of study carrels as additional space for wi-fi users. B. Honeywell performed routine maintenance on the boiler and air handler 1/11. C. Honeywell adjusted the cold air intake 1/9. D. Dana conducted a walk-through with Fidelity Cleaners 1/3. E. Public Works performed several routine maintenance tasks 1/15. They discovered that the two exterior security lights on the southwest side of the building were broken. Heights Electric has been scheduled to replace both. F. Fidelity buffed the Activity Room floors 1/25. II. COLLECTION A. Elaine is working on the collectibles order, and it will be placed in early February. B. A large adult paperback order has been placed and received. C. Staff is playing catch-up with book orders. Kelly and Stacey are working on placing orders and getting items attached as quickly as possible. D. The reference collection was weeded in January according to the new schedule. III. PROGRAMS A. The Library Board met 1/8 with five members, five staff, and one guest in attendance. Cindy McCleary of BKV gave a presentation on the process behind designing and constructing a new library. B. The Friends of the Library met 1/7 with eight members present. C. The classes from Immaculate Conception School visited the Library during their regularly scheduled times 1/14-1/18. D. Hot Reads for Cold Nights started 1/22. E. Dana led a book discussion on Snow Flower and the secret fan on 1/24. She had six participants. F. The bulk loan was delivered to the schools on 1/10. G. Dana has the tax forms out in the East Room. This program has changed dramatically since more people are doing e-filing. H. Maude Hart Lovelace voting started 1/28. IV. TECHNOLOGY A. CybraryN has worked better this month. B. Two staff monitors have been replaced with more ergonomical models. C. Dana worked with Kelly to update the signage by the public workstations to reflect the new Anokat colors and design. D. Judy Soule rolled over the book orders 1/9 so that Kelly could start ordering for 2008. V. STAFF A. Stacey introduced Carole blowers to Scala training on 1/9. B. I attended the LOC meeting at ACL 1/10. C. Marsha attended the Comprehensive Arts Planning Program (CAPP) meeting at ISD #13 1/10. th D. Marsha celebrated her 14 year as Children’s Librarian during the month. E. I attended the Public Service meeting at ACL 1/24. VI. FOUNDATION A. The Foundation Board met 1/16 with six members present. Treasurer Sharon Shedlov presented the year-end report and reported on the progress of the capital campaign. The Board reviewed the 2007 fundraiser at the Heights Theatre and tentatively selected 12/7/08 th for the 2008 fundraiser. The Library will be celebrating its 80 anniversary on 12/3/08, and since the Library’s first location was in the Heights Theatre Building, the two events will be tied together. VII. MISC A. Acting Captain Sergeant Lenny Austin presented a personal safety session for the Supervisors 1/3. He also addressed how the Police Department can work with staff to address behavior issues and violent situations. I appreciated the time he spent with staff and the information he shared with us. B. The City of Columbia Heights hosted the three top candidates for Police Chief 1/29-1/31. The Library was included on the tour, and I participated in the introductory sessions. C. Major projects: a. Shut down of 2007 funds and payment of final bills b. Balance and reconcile the donation account c.
