II. COLLECTIONS
A. Staff began weeding of the audiocassette collection. Items will be discarded due to low
circulation and damage.
B. I have begun collection development of language (bilingual) materials paying particular attention
to items available in Vietnamese, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Indian, and whatever I can locate
from the Middle Eastern countries. We are getting an increased demand for bilingual materials
in languages other than Spanish. The 460 section has grown rapidly with the addition of the
Spanish language materials. Perhaps the time has come to separate items into their specialty
sections?
III. PROGRAMS
A. Staff has begun program planning for 2008 and booking of summer performers will begin the
first week in January. Finance has established account numbers for the grant funds and we are
looking at hosting a series of cultural programs designed to highlight some of the community’s
diverse cultural backgrounds. More about these programs in January.
B. A new Anokat image and new services will be released January 14. This will be the culmination
of some major work on the part of the children’s department staff. The project images were
produced by Kelly Olson and I and will provide the visual image of the County’s WEB catalog
page.
IV. MEETINGS
A. The director and I attended the third session of the After School Activities Committee. This
session explained the data gathering process required by the grant. Staff has established a
separate set of budget sheets and I am in the process of setting up new registration forms for use
by program participants.
B. I participated in a discussion group at MELSA on December 18. Staff from metro libraries
gathered to discuss teen services and programs. What works? What doesn’t? And Why? I
discovered that there are many more libraries offering teen specific programming than ever
before and that many of the programs are getting rave reviews from the teen participants.
Unfortunately some of the more successful programs require space and or equipment that we do
not have at this time. I am looking at the potential of providing some of the smaller programs
however. The program schedule for 2008 is filling up quickly.
V. STAFF
A. Clerk Kelly Olson has been busy with year-end tasks including closing accounts and cleaning up
budgetary loose ends. She also completed the database clean up of magazines.
B. Pages have aided in the weeding of the media.
C. Library Aide, Cristy Tombarge prepared the bulletin board and support materials for the
upcoming adult reading program “Hot Reads for Cold Nights”. Cristy also helped with the
database clean-up project mentioned above.
