October operational report

I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE
A. Orkin performed routine maintenance 10/17.
B. Honeywell performed routine maintenance 10/19. They returned 10/24 to work on the
heating unit on the roof over the East Room and on the center air conditioning unit.
C. Heights Electric repaired a light socket and a bulb broken off in a socket 10/22.
D. Dana conducted a walk-through inspection with Fidelity Cleaners 10/4.
E. Fidelity buffed the Activity Room floors 10/26.
F. The men’s restroom on the main floor required a major repair 10/24.
II. COLLECTION
A. The annual large print order has been received and entered into the collection.
B. Kelly has been working on checking all the back-orders and cancels at Baker & Taylor so
that staff has an accurate accounting of budgeted money left to be spent.
C. Ramon worked on the Fodor’s order.
D. Stacey has submitted all the backlog of misses to cataloguing. Thanks to Donna for getting
us all caught up!
E. An adult paperback order was placed and received.
III. PROGRAMS
A. The Library Board met 10/2 with five members in attendance.
B. The Friends of the Library met 10/1 with 10 members present.
C. Becky attended the City Council meeting 10/8 with four of the Volunteens to accept the
Mayor’s proclamation in honor of Teen Read Week. All the teens introduced themselves to
the Council.
D. Five sessions of preschool storytime were presented during the month. Thanks to Dana and
Kelly for covering three of them in Marsha’s absence.
E. The bulk loan was delivered to the schools on 10/4.
F. Marsha facilitated the second book discussion group 10/25. They discussed the book
Running with scissors.
G. CHPL hosted the Public Service meeting for ACL 10/11. It is always a pleasure to welcome
the Branch Librarians to the building.
H. Teen Read Week was celebrated 10/15-10/20 with special contests.
I. Dana taught her first computer class 10/17.
J. On 10/20 Stevie Ray hosted an improvisation program in the Activity Room.
K. A special program on Mary Shelley was presented 10/23 by the Bakken Museum.
L. Marsha was the guest speaker for a Level 2 Read/Write class at Central Middle School
10/24.
IV. TECHNOLOGY
A. Stacey has been learning the fine points of the Scala program that is used to produce the
announcements on the Library’s cable channel (Channel 19). She has been able to utilize
animation and has experimented with how the pages are constructed. Check it out to see
samples of her work!
B. A UPS was installed 10/5 on the cable equipment.
V. STAFF
A. Al Mamaril has joined the staff as a part-time Library Supervisor. Al’s training is complete
and he will start on the regular schedule 11/5.
B. Dana attended the annual Minnesota Library Association conference in Mankato 10/24-
10/26.
C. Marsha attended the Children’s meeting at ACL 10/30.
D. Becky attended the LOC meeting 10/4.
E. Becky attended three meetings about paperback labeling at ACL during the month.
FOUNDATION
F. The Foundation Board met 10/17 with five members present. Plans for the fundraiser at the
Heights Theatre were discussed. An updated list of items for the silent auction was
distributed. Marlaine made a presentation at the City Council meeting about the capital
campaign and two articles have appeared in the local newspapers. Several donations have
been received. Tom and Cliff distributed tickets and brochures around town. The Board met
again 10/31 to monitor progress on ticket sales and donations.
VII. MISC
A. Several instances of inappropriate behavior were documented at the Library during the
month. I have been working with the Police Chief to address the problems.
B. The annual hearing between the City Council and the Library Board concerning the proposed
budget occurred 10/24.
C. A new time card was introduced by Finance in October.
