Rebecca Loader, Library Director SUBJECT: September operational report DATE: September 20, 2007 I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE A. The departmental copier needed a service call 9/20. B. Honeywell checked the boiler 9/14 and prepared it for the heating season. C. Public Works performed many small maintenance repairs 9/18. D. The air conditioning unit over the Adult Reading Room blew its motor and fan 9/19. Honeywell is working on the repair. E. Fidelity buffed the Activity Room floors 9/21. II. COLLECTION A. Nine hardcover book orders were placed during the month. B. Additional copies of best-sellers and adult replacements were ordered. C. A large print order was placed. D. Work has started on updating the collectibles section of the adult non-fiction. III. PROGRAMS A. The new Museum Adventure Pass program started 9/6. The new graphics and passes are outstanding, and the patrons are glad that the program is going to be around for another year. The passes are being discharged at a different time of day on a rotating basis to give a fair chance to patrons who work varying shifts. B. Public Works picked up the Library’s items for the City auction 9/4. Most of the items ended up in either the recycling bin or the dumpster. C. Dana visited Park View Villa 9/14 with selected items for the residents to check out. She will be taking books there on a regular basis. D. The Library Board met 9/4 with all members in attendance. E. The Friends of the Library met 9/10 with 11 members present. F. Marsha attended open houses 9/6 (Valley View Elementary), 9/11 (ESL Family Night at Highland), 9/12 (ECFE), 9/17 (ESL Family Night at Valley View), and 9/25 (Central Middle School). G. Classes from Immaculate Conception School started their monthly scheduled visits the week of 9/17. H. The Hylander 4-H Club placed displays in the Children’s Department and East Room in honor of National 4-H week. I. The annual 4-H Round-up was held 9/20 in the Activity Room. J. Dana facilitated the first book discussion group 9/27. They discussed the book Mercy falls. K. The book sale cart started 9/4. Thanks to Dana for getting all the materials organized to start the new program. Response from the patrons has been good. IV. TECHNOLOGY A. The Library’s cable channel (Channel 19) experienced several problems during the month. ComCast was able to isolate a break in the cable which made the channel broadcast in an overlay with local channel 5. The quality of the reception has improved greatly. V. STAFF A. Marsha and I met with Marlene Moulton-Janssen, Mary Caven, and Judy Soule 9/18 about the debut of the new Anokat. Preparations for publicizing the new features are moving along for the January unveiling. B. Four staff members had performance reviews during the month. C. Interviews for the vacant Library Supervisor position took place the week of 9/10. Dana participated in the interviews as part of one of her position goals. A conditional offer has been made to a candidate. D. Stacey attended training with Jorjean at LSS 9/12 on attaching bibliographic items in Workflows and in using MacroExpress. E. Staff members attended the City Employee Picnic 9/12 at Kordiak Park. F. The City is contracting with an independent agency to produce brief informative videos for use on the City’s website. I have worked with Linda Magee, Assistant to the City Manager, on composing the scripts and checking them for factual accuracy, grammar, and usage. The filming will take place in October G. Stacey Hendren started work as the new Clerk-Typist II (Adult) 9/4. Stacey comes to the Library with a wide range of public service experience in the public schools and Sam’s club, and one year’s experience as a Page at CHPL. She was introduced to the Library Board and to the City Council. VI. FOUNDATION A. The Foundation Board met 9/19 with five members present. Discussion centered on the details of the upcoming fundraiser at the Heights Theatre. The film, “Scrooge,” starring Albert Finney, will be shown, and the adult choir from Immaculate Conception Church will present a vocal program accompanied by Harvey Gustafson, playing the theatre’s pipe organ. A silent auction will also be held. Tom distributed the new brochures to be used for the capital campaign. VII. MISC A. I am very pleased to announce that delivery went to four times per week starting 9/4. The patrons are delighted to have an additional day for their requests to come in, and staff is glad to have the heavier deliveries spread into the extra day. B. Abandoned bicycles were found at the building 9/5 and 9/13. C. Fall schedule hours started 9/4, and Saturday hours changed to 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on 9/8. D. .Major projects: a. Budget work b.
