When asked about their awareness of specific programs, respondents are most aware that YMCAs offer swimming lessons, adult and youth fitness programs, and programs for children, youth, and teens. s In contrast, respondents are least aware that YMCAs offer programs for rehabilitation needs, financial assistance for families and children who cannot afford membership fees, before- and after-school childcare programs, and licensed childcare. I 1 majority of respondents prefer the new YMCA have a pool, they are relatively split regarding their preference for a warmer leisure pool or a cooler lap swimming pool. Gym facilities are also important to potential members. When considering the choice of a location for the WCA, we recommend that several factors be considered including residents' preference of a site, their likelihood of joining at each site, the growth trends of the area, and existing characteristics of each site. -~ Because the largest proportion of respondents prefer the former NEI school location and more than half indicated they would consider joining the YMCA at This location, we recommend the YMCA consider the former NEI school proposed location as the leading location. However, we also recommend consideration be given to the Husef Park location because the location may be more suitable to building a new facility. ~ It is clear that respondents have a preference for a YMCA built with a pool and that they have privileges at other YMCA's. The YNiCPA and city of Colu~~~bia Heights need to strive to include a pool in their future building plans. 2 2007 YMCA Columbia Heights Study Factors Influencing Decision to Join I:he YI'~1CA ` ~ ' :these 0 f ;.€.l r,i_.'CIiI`: A's'~11-ii ~~ ~ Ceil;c"`,~ l~i~':c~~ _ ~i~ .;i ~~'-? ;~ !=i ~ ~ ~ ~i~ ~Ei ! ~:.~iiC~i~~;~ .J,~ factors would have the greatest influence on their decision to join and are even more influential to likely joiners. Location, hours the facility is open, and types of programming offered are also highly influential in respondents' decision to join. y Tlie YA~CA must ensure that it meets or exceeds expectations in each of these areas that are most influential to respondents joining. The YMCA should also highlight these factors when marketing its programs and services. ®verall Conclusions • Many residents would like to see the YMCA become part of their community and are willing to pay for memberships, primarily if a pool is built. However, one-third of respondents are already members of a public or private health facility (eight percent are members of the YMCA) and of these, most plan to renew their memberships. • Among those wl~o are members of a recreational fitness facility, most are interested in joining a new YMCA only if a pool is included; this is especially true among current YMCA members. Therefore, if a new YMCA is built without a pool, the risk of YMCA members leaving their current facility is low. • Safety is one of the top factors which influences people's willingness to join a YMCA fitness center-. • Few respondents in need of paid childcare outside of the home would participate in licensed childcare provided by a new YMCA. s Most respondents are willing to drive up to 5 miles, or- up to 15 minutes, and would prefer to have the new YMCA located close to their- home. ~~:: °'.. _. ... _ 3 2007 YMCA Columbia Heights Study ~ack~r®und and Purp®se The purpose of this research is to assess whether a YMCA can be sustained in Colui~nbia Heights, Minnesota. The YMCA is considering building a new facility at one of two locations in Columbia Heights: 1) in Huset Park near 40th Avenue, between University and Central Avenues, or 2) formerly the NEI school in tl~e vicinity of 41St and Central Avenues. This current study specifically addresses tl~e following: ~ Image and awareness of the YMCA in general ~ Desired programming and facilities of a YMCA, including older adult and youth programming ~ Interest in a YMCA membership, and factors influencing likelihood to purchase a membership ~ Preference for building the YMCA at the two potential locations, and suppoi~ for a YMCA with a pool or witi~ no pool ~ Support for the YMCA becoming a pant of the Columbia Heights community ~ Market projections for a YMCA located at each of the two potential locations with a pool and without a pool The YMCA retained the independent market research firm of Anderson, Niebuhr & Associates, Inc. to conduct this research. _`` 2007 YMCA Columbia Heights Study Research I~ieth®d Population and Sample and re h4 re PJ 2 A.ve Pd s k bra w gIk Ln PdE F~ ' ~t,t~ ;.~ r~E .t~~ a'x~, B,.ra hrt `i~o: ~, `s t~raef ~j ve%'~ 34tYF F.~~m NE ~~ ~ ~Tth "'vz PdE_-j37th, F:~e NE :~ -.g :~ - . ~ . ~ ~~ - - ~3:th~ ~~r~ h:E ~ z ~ 'ecfi: a0 7=3 l u' ~r z „ 3?th:s~Y P.IE u' ~,' m ira: i! ~ ~R Pkayr; 3~i'd' ~ tl1E m ~ '.. ~;,2r~~ ? •re' 14E ~ c r' t~,? ~. The population of interest for this study is residents wl~o live within a 2- mile radius surrounding the potential sites in Columbia Heights. The following partial ZIP codes are included in this area: 55421, 55418, 55432 (see Map 1). Anderson-Niebuhr obtained a list of households in this defined area, and from this list drew an equal probability random sample of 350 households. This sample size yields results accurate to ±5% with a 95% confidence level when generalizing to all households in these ZIP codes. Idiifll"' 1 ~ 71f fdSl~bt7JGY. Using information from these discussions, Anderson-Niebul~r prepared a draft survey that was reviewed by the YMCA and City representatives. This draft was pretested with a random sample of 10 residents living in the defined area. The questionnaire was then revised and finalized based on tl~e pretest results. A copy is located in the appendix. Data CoileCtion All potential survey respondents were sent a preletter prior to the beginning of data collection to explain the purpose of the study and encourage their participation. The surveys were conducted using Anderson-Niebuhr's established telephone survey methodology. Interviews were conducted using Computer Aided Telephone Inte[viewlf?g (CATI) software. Data collection occurred from June 1A, through August 1, 2007. A total of 350 surveys were completed yielding a response rate of 74%. Data AnaiySlS Anderson-Niebuhr defined analyses to be peiforrned in consultation with YMCA and Columbia Heights representatives. Anderson- Niebuhr's on-site computer facilities and computer programs contained in the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS/Windows) were used to conduct the analyses. Complete descriptive statistics are provided for each survey item. Data were weighted based on income to more accurately reflect Census information for the survey area. In addition, crosstabulation analyses on key questions were conducted to determine significant differences between those respondents who are likely to join the YMCA at each potential location and those who are not. Respondents wl~o answered 6 2007 YMCA Columbia Heights Study definitely join or probably join to at least one of the questions 9, 10, 11, or 12 (two locations and two price points) were classified as "likely joiners." Those respondents who indicated they would probably not join or definitely not join were classified as "non-joiners." The results of these analyses are displayed within the Summary of Findings section under the heading "Other Findings." Only statistically significant differences are reported. Respondents' comments to the open-end questions were coded into themes and are displayed in tables in the Summary of Findings. Finally, market projections were conducted for each potential site at each price point and are presented in a separate section of the repot-t following the Summary of Findings. ~..R 2007 YMCA Columbia Heights Study ~a.~~~~~ ®~ ~~~~~~~~ I his section of the repoiz presents findings based on the responses or' 350 residents living in the Columbia Heights area.
