1. Programs
th
a. Friends of the Library met on March 5 in the library boardroom. The
Library Director presented dates for the annual book sale, which will be
thth
held on June 6 and 7, 2007.
b. At home service saw an increase in deliveries this month, with three
patrons receiving a total of 39 items. A new resident signed up for the
program in March.
c. Volunteers were busy this month, logging 17 hours of time in the library.
Three volunteers assisted with the Arthur’s book challenge program,
helping with the scavenger hunt and setting out snacks. Other volunteers
labeled shelves, helped with an upcoming display, and organized the
Campbell’s soup labels.
2. Collection
a. A large DVD order was placed in March. Several items were replacing
lost or damaged materials, along with a number of new titles. All of the
titles have been circulating well.
b. A standing order of books on compact disc has been established with
Random House. Two titles will be added each month at a fixed price.
One benefit of this program is free replacements if a disc is lost or
damaged.
c. The first adult music CD order of the year was placed, and featured
several Grammy-winning artists.
3. Projects
a. Arthur’s Book Challenge, funded through a grant from WGBH in Boston,
th
kicked off on March 5, 2007, with 150 people in attendance. Children
were able to meet a costumed Arthur Read character, collect materials to
begin the reading challenge, and to participate in a scavenger hunt through
the library. Participants pledged to read 15 minutes per day over a three-
th
week period. At the end of the three weeks, on March 26, prizes were
available for those who completed the program, and patrons were
encouraged to check out more materials. A more complete assessment of
the program will be available in April.
b. Hot Reads for Cold Nights was successful this year, with 97 participants
reading 164 books. Sixteen prizes were awarded both for reading and for
those who won the bingo portion of the program. This continues to be a
popular program for adults.
c. A new cleaner was hired by Fidelity to clean the library. Several
reminders and notes have been written in the training process, but the
cleaning seems to be improving steadily.
d. Displays in the library include a bulletin board featuring a database for
readers called NoveList, an area in the lobby showcasing books with
historical photos, a paperback array called “Girls Day Out,” and the ever-
popular new books. The display case in the East room features gardening
materials provided by the Friends of the Library.
e. The Anoka County Historical Society sponsored an exhibit of photographs
from around the county in conjunction with the sesquicentennial
celebration in the county. Many patrons from the community came to the
library especially to view the exhibit.
