Storytime 2/27/2007
A. Early Literacy information was added to the storytime routine, and adults in
attendance receive tips on what to look for to provide the foundation for literacy
within the family. The average attendance has been about 20 children.
B. Contracts for summer performers were processed and mailed.
C. Staff prepared publicity and program materials for “Arthur Read Kick Off”
scheduled for March 5th
II. COLLECTION
A. We continue to struggle with changes in the ordering process. Currently the
Children's Department is working from September 06 selection tools. The
Director has made some changes in the process and I am hopeful that we will be
well underway by the end of March.
B. Orders were processed for the Columbia Heights portion of the En Su Biblioteca
Grant (received by MELSA). I ordered Spanish language book & CD
combination packs with the children's portion of the grant. The materials have
arrived, and I anticipate they will be available for circulation by March 1 (see
grant section).
III. PROJECTS
A. Preparations are underway for National Library Week programming.
B. I will be meeting with ACL librarians on March 7 to plan programming for teens
for summer 2007.
IV. GRANTS
A. We are awaiting the final review session for the MRAC grant. The 2007 award
date is scheduled for March 28. Foundation members and library staff are
preparing materials including news releases, application forms, and publicity
items in anticipation of receiving the grant. We hope to have applications
available by the end of March.
B. En Su Biblioteca is a grant applied for and received by MELSA for all metro
libraries. The object of the grant is to make as many materials as possible
available to our largest immigrant population, which are Spanish language-
speaking immigrants. Columbia Heights has nearly 30% of the Spanish
population within the County. I have served on the committee to determine how
to expend the grant funds in accordance with the grant specifications. Columbia
Heights Public Library will be one of two locations hosting a Día de los
Niños/Día de los Libros celebration on May 5th. Local artists Leo and Kathy
Lara will be providing entertainment for that program. The committee will
continue working on publicity for the event and additional program plans. I am
also considering an additional program for fall 2007 to be paid from COH
program funds. This would be included as a part of the continuation of the grant
and would include a second program provided by the AZTEC dancers
KetzalCoatlicue.
V. STAFF
A. Children's Clerk, Kelly Olson stepped in to provide a storytime in my absence on
February 6. She prepared portions of the City version of the annual report, sent
and received a number of book orders and received cross training in the
processing of bills from Adult Clerk, Jeanine Schmidt.
B. Library Aide, Cristy Tombarge, established two new book displays and prepared
materials for I Love to Read Month. Cristy has also been spending time filling in
at the adult circulation desk and aiding in processing delivery materials.
C. Pages spent considerable time checking donations, double-checking book orders,
processing incoming materials and shifting books within the collection.
