Friends of the Library met in the boardroom on February 12. Marsha Tubbs presented the library’s wish list. The Friends agreed to purchase four office chairs, a story time flannel board easel, 10 archival boxes to store newspapers, and two book trucks for the library. All of the items have been ordered. b. At home service deliveries have been made for three patrons this month, and a new client has been added to this program. c. Volunteers have been busy making new labels for the shelves, helping to display the new bulletin board, and maintaining the paperback collection. Fourteen hours have been logged so far in February. II. COLLECTION a. A large music order of compact discs has been placed in late February. b. Many DVDs have been ordered this month, including the replacement of some titles we have lost, along with new adult and juvenile titles. c. The decision to participate in a standing order plan through Random House has been made for books on compact disc. Two titles will be added each month, and the library receives a discount, plus free replacements for participating in the standing order plan. The first titles will be added in March. III. PROJECTS a. WGBH in Boston has awarded the library a $1,000 grant for a family reading program featuring Arthur Read from the popular books and PBS television series. This month, the publicity has been distributed and materials printed. TPT, the local PBS station has donated tattoos and coloring books to be used as prizes. The reading program will span most of March, beginning March 5th. b. “Hot Reads for Cold Nights” is winding down. Some patrons have won prizes through the bingo portion of the program, the drawing for prizes will occur in early March. Patrons have enjoyed the bingo aspect of Hot Reads this year, and it keeps them coming to the library every week. c. Every library in the metro area has received grant money to purchase Spanish language materials. Several reference books, fiction and non-fiction in Spanish have been ordered. A number of Spanish language DVDs and CDs have also been added to the collection. Some patrons are already awaiting the arrival of these materials on the shelves. d. Fidelity Cleaners have replaced the missing saddles on the recycling containers in the Children's Department. A new permanent cleaner has been hired and will start soon. e. Displays for the month of February included “Minnesota Reads”, a collection of Minnesota authors; “Blizzard of Books”, featuring many of our large books; and “New Books”. The bulletin board highlighted the work of the Friends of the Library organization. f. New signs for the Adult Reading Room have been ordered and hung. The signs look wonderful, and help aid patrons to find the newly separated genre fiction collections.
