Rebecca Loader, Library Director SUBJECT: August operational report DATE: August 31, 2006 I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE A. Suburban Air caulked around the central air conditioning unit and replaced canvas strips around ductwork over the Adult Reading Room 8/2. They also replaced a filter and fixed a silicone seal. B. Honeywell checked the hot water heater 8/3. C. Public Works did several small “handyman” jobs 8/4 and 8/23. D. Honeywell replaced the pump on the boiler 8/15. E. Bids are being taken to replace the wooden cap on the exterior of the building. Hopefully this repair can take place yet this fall. F. Schindler conducted a successful pressure test on the elevator 8/18. G. Fidelity buffed the floors in the Activity Room 8/18. H. Honeywell replaced the circuit board on the air conditioning unit above the Adult Reading Room 8/22. I. Water poured through the northern emergency door 8/24 during the torrential rain. Thanks to the fast action of Dan, Ramon, Regina, and Sarah no materials were lost. II. COLLECTION A. The Library’s local history collection was tapped by the advertising agency promoting Grand Central Lofts. They will be putting together a photo collage for use in the common area of one of the buildings. B. Dana started a project on collection development in the adult 300’s. C. 5 book orders were placed during the month. D. A dvd order was placed. E. 2005 orders with Baker and Taylor were inadvertently duplicated 8/14. Staff is working with Baker and Taylor and Judy to resolve the situation and discern what happened. F. The Library Supervisors are working on a project to look up collectible books withdrawn from the collection to see if any should be taken to used book dealers. III. PROGRAMS A. The Library Board met 8/2 with six in attendance. Councilmember Tami Ericson-Diehm sat in for Councilmember Bruce Kelzenberg. B. Three Homebound clients received deliveries in the month. C. The American Girl tea party, “Josefina’s Fiesta,” was a rip-roaring success 8/9. D. Cristy and Marsha designed a sign for the Sesquicentennial “One Book” program. E. Marsha made a presentation about the Library at Community Helpers Day 8/16. F. Marsha and Becky welcomed the new teachers in Independent School District #13 to the Library 8/23. There are 53 of them (and they all look very young)! G. The Volunteens were recognized at a reception in their honor 8/24. They received a certificate and a small gift presented by the Library Board. H. Marsha attended Immaculate Conception School’s teacher orientation 8/29 to give a presentation on library services. IV. TECHNOLOGY A. Paul has upgraded the memory in all the Library’s pc’s to accommodate the new WorkFlows client. One pc had to be replaced. B. Joanne was trained by Jeanine to attach new items to the database entries. C. The upgraded memory has made the WorkFlows client work faster on the pc’s. D. The new CybraryN client appears to be working better with the Q. Yay!! Patrons are still having issues with getting booted off of Ancestry and AllData. V. STAFF A. Interviews for the new Adult Services Librarian position were conducted the first week in August. The top two candidates were invited to second interviews 8/10. I am pleased to announce that Dana Weigman has accepted the position and will start work 9/11. B. Becky attended the “One Book” meeting 8/14. C. Sarah Doepel celebrated her one-year anniversary as a Page in August. Sarah is a “graduate” of the Library’s Volunteen program. D. Applications for Page positions closed 8/16 and interviews were conducted the week of 8/28. E. Becky attended the LOC meeting 8/17 at the County. F. John Kleinfehn, Page, has left for college, and his hours are temporarily being covered by other Pages. G. Staff attended All-Staff-Day at Bunker Hills 8/25. H. Becky and Marsha met with the Pages 8/22 to negotiate Fall schedule. VI. FOUNDATION A. The Foundation did not meet this month. They will meet in September to welcome new member Father Thomas Kunnel. VII. MISC A. Major projects: a. Taking bids for replacement of the building wooden cap b. Resolving duplicate Baker & Taylor orders c. Hiring new staff d. American Girl e. Volunteen recognition B. Staff contributed a dog-themed basket to Staff Day for the silent auction. We got a little carried away, and it turned into three baskets. ;-) You just can’t have too many dog toys. And that’s what the dogs have taught me.
