PROGRAMS A. American Girl program was the highlight of the month. Forty-five girls participated and 5 adults supervised. The theme was Josefina’s Fiesta. Participants created a Mexican paper doll, learned to do hand weaving as they created their own belts, and made their very own beaded bracelets. Fiesta goodies were supplied by La Casita and Sam’s Club thanks to funds donated by the Flanary Group, Inc. Reception for summer volunteers was held on August 24. The library had 22 volunteer applicants this summer. Volunteers provided 609 hours of public service time this summer. Volunteers and their families were treated to pizza courtesy of Tasty Pizza and brownies. Parents were very appreciative of this program. C. I attended the first ever Anoka County childcare providers picnic on August 23 and provided story time for 72 children and approximately eight different providers. D. The Library Director and I met with 60 new District 13 teachers as part of a get acquainted tour on August 23. The teachers visited the library and received a short tour and presentation on library services available to them. II. COLLECTION A. Easy non-fiction and J non-fiction collections were shifted to allow for expansion of the easy non-fiction section. B. The final 2006 standing order for books on CD was placed. C. Listening Library offered a double discount for books on compact disc and subsequently a second order was prepared utilizing funds from the Children's Department donation account. Books on CD are very popular with our immigrant population and I anticipate that the new additions will circulate well. D. Another boardbook order was prepared and will be placed in September. E. Children's Department staff managed to order more than $37,000 worth of books this month. This was no small feat and took a considerable amount of talent! III. PROJECTS A. At the request of the County, staff designed and prepared posters to accompany the One Book, One County promotion being utilized as a part of the county's Sesquicentennial Celebration. Voting for titles is underway. IV. STAFF A. Pages aided in the shifting of the collections, aided in the preparation of new shelf labels and continued checking selection tools and preparing order cards B. Library Aide, Cristy Tombarge, prepared the One Book, One County poster, prepared materials for American Girl, aided in the set up for both American Girl and the Volunteer Reception, and prepared new shelf labels. Cristy also prepared several book orders to be forwarded to Baker & Taylor. C. Library Clerk, Kelly Olson, sent and received several book orders, received magazines, and prepared materials for the volunteer reception.
