October operational report

I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE
A. AmeriPride installed new towel dispensers in all the restrooms 10/2.
B. Dana conducted a walk-through inspection of the building with Fidelity Cleaners 10/4.
C. The proposal to replace the stalls in the main floor restrooms came in at a reasonable rate.
This project will be scheduled for the beginning of November.
D. Honeywell bled radiators and adjusted the boiler 10/12.
E. Heights Electric has submitted a bid to add exterior lighting to the southern side of the
building and to repair the electrical mast at the point where the coaxial cable comes in.
F. The departmental Kyocera copier needed repair 10/20.
G. The windows were cleaned 10/20/06.
H. Dalco performed annual maintenance on the roof 10/20/06.
I. The Library was without phones 10/21 due to failure of a switch at City Hall.
J. The work to replace the exterior wooden cap started 10/23/06.
II. COLLECTION
A. The reference collection has been shifted to house the special sections (e.g. Consumer,
Business, etc.) at the beginning of the shelving. The Consumer Information Center has been
moved from the East Room to the area across from where the Consumer Reference is housed
in the Adult Reading Room.
B. The old microfilm has been donated to the University of Minnesota, and a volunteer has re-
labeled the cabinets to reflect the newspapers that were retained.
C. Dana has been weeding the vertical file. One file cabinet has been emptied and removed
from the floor.
D. Eight bookorders have been sent.
E. A large juvenile book-on-cd order was received.
F. Three dvd orders were received.
G. The last dvd order and adult music cd order were placed.
H. A large-print order was placed and received.
III. PROGRAMS
A. The Friends met at the Dragon House Restaurant 10/2.
B. The Library Board met 10/3 with 5 members present. Pat Sowada presented a plaque from
the Sister City International Organization to the Library for support of all their projects.
C. The bulk loan was delivered to the schools 10/5.
D. Dana conducted an ESL tour 10/5.
E. Four sessions of pre-school storytime were held during the month.
F. The classes from ICS visited during their regularly-scheduled times the week of 10/9.
G. “Yoga for All Ages” was presented 10/16 as part of Teen Read Week.
H. Staff got to judge the Fire Safety posters 10/20 (we love doing this!).
IV. TECHNOLOGY
A. The first major upgrade to the new ILS occurred 10/4 and 10/5. Offline circulation allowed
the buildings to remain open. It was the return to “old fashioned” reference as staff had to
remember the Dewey Decimal System and use the test server to locate call numbers.
B. Comcast was able to fix the bad transmission from the Library’s cable channel and the
problem with the sound 10/13 and 10/17.
C. Jeanine and Becky met with Judy Soule 10/19 to discuss how to change the process of
Collections in SIRSI so that COH patrons will be covered the best.
V. STAFF
A. New Pages, Betsy Bush, Stacey Hendren, and Tracy Shaffer, finished training 10/12 and
worked three days each in tandem with another veteran Page. They will be on the regular
schedule beginning 10/30. A new Page schedule was negotiated 10/17.
B. Ashlyn Altmeyer celebrated her 6-months anniversary with the Library during the month.
C. Dana attended a meeting on the Museum Adventure Pass program 10/25.
VI. FOUNDATION
A. The Foundation Board met 10/18. Discussion centered on the text and photos to be used in
the brochure for the annual campaign.
VII. MISC
A. The hearing between the City Council and the Library Board on the proposed 2007 Library
budget occurred 10/25.
B. Staff participated in Make-a-Difference-Day on 10/27.
