I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE
A. Honeywell replaced the water pump on the boiler, cleaned the boiler, and prepped the system
for the heating season.
B. Honeywell performed routine maintenance on the HVAC system 9/15.
C. Quotes have been taken to replace the rotten sections of the wooden cap around the top of
the library building and the shed roof. The work will be completed before November.
D. Fidelity buffed the activity room floors 9/15.
E. Public Works assisted with many small maintenance projects during September.
F. The windows were cleaned 9/22.
II. COLLECTION
A. Book orders were halted in September while an issue with ordering through SIRSI with
Baker and Taylor was resolved. Somehow the 2005 and 2006 closed purchase orders were
duplicated. Thanks to Judy and Lynne for all their help with straightening this out.
Needless to say, COH is now behind in ordering, receiving, and attaching current titles, and
we will try to catch up as soon as possible.
B. Dana met with Craig Mears of Recorded Books 9/19.
C. A dvd order for anime features was placed and received.
D. Two paperback orders were placed.
E. The large print annual order has been started.
F. An order for adult books on cd’s has been placed.
G. The University of Minnesota picked up the obsolete microfilm rolls 9/25. COH will
continue to hold the Focus as a current microfilm title and the Minneapolis Star/Tribune as
an inactive title.
III. PROGRAMS
A. The Library Board met 9/5 with five members present. Bob Streetar, Community
Development Director for the City of Columbia Heights, gave a presentation on
development plans being considered within the next three years.
B. The first bulk loan of the year was delivered to the schools 9/7.
C. The Museum Adventure Pass program started with a bang. Thanks to Public Works for
hanging the two banners in a very timely fashion on 9/7. Steve got a question from a patron
while he was up in the bucket outside the library! Staff is very pleased with the positive
response we are seeing from the patrons when they check out their passes.
D. The Friends met 9/11 with four members present. Becky introduced Dana Weigman as their
new liaison and gave a report on the status of the library.
E. Immaculate Conception Classes visited the Library during their regularly-scheduled times
the week of 9/18.
F. The 4-H promotional meeting was held 9/21.
G. Ballots from patrons to vote on the choices for “One Book, One County” have been turned
in. The winner is The children’s blizzard.
IV. TECHNOLOGY
A. Judy upgraded the clients on the circulation and discharge machines 9/20 in preparation for
offline circulation during the upgrade to the ILS scheduled in October.
B. Becky attended the ILS meeting 9/21. Preparations for the upgrade in October are in full
swing.
C. A class of student nurses from the University of Minnesota came to the library 9/21 to
prepare an assignment on Columbia Heights. Their instructor reserved the meeting room,
and the students could utilize the historic documents, vertical file, and other materials
available on the community. It was very neat to see the students with their laptops spread
out in the East Room using Wi-Fi in a perfect blend of written word and technology.
V. STAFF
A. Dan Marcou joined the staff as a part-time Evening Supervisor 9/6. Dan will work Monday
nights and alternate Saturdays. Dan has an extensive background in public service and
library work.
B. Dana Weigman joined the staff as the full-time Adult Services Librarian 9/11. Dana worked
part-time at COH and has worked at Washington County Library. In a previous life, she
was part of the storytelling duo “Bells and Whistles.”
C. Marsha attended a meeting 9/14 concerning the summer Neighborhood Bridges program
held at the library.
D. Marsha attended the Summer Reading Club wrap-up meeting at Northtown 9/19.
E. Three new Pages have joined the staff: Betsy Bush, Stacey Hendren, and Tracy Shaffer.
Training started 9/25.
F. Ashlyn Altmeyer celebrated her six-months anniversary with the library during the month.
VI. FOUNDATION
A. The Foundation Board met 9/6 with all members present. Father Tom Kunnel was
welcomed as a new member, and he gave a presentation about the long-standing support of
Immaculate Conception Church for the community and the Library.

B. Due to the 80 anniversary celebration going on at the Heights Theatre this fall, the
Foundation fundraiser has been cancelled for 2006. Plans are under way for a reading
marathon around the time of National Library Week.
C. Becky met with Tom Sherohman 9/26 to finalize wording for the Foundation’s new
brochure.
VII. MISC
A. September is “Library Card Sign-Up” month, and staff spent a lot of time giving out cards
to new patrons.
B. Saturday hours changed 9/9 to 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
C. Delivery changed to Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday the week of 9/5.
D. Major projects:
a. Preparation of the detail budget book.
b. Recruit, interview, hire, and train new personnel.
c. Take quotes for building projects.
