Rebecca Loader, Library Director SUBJECT: May operational report DATE: May 31, 2006 I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE A. The windows were cleaned 5/1. B. Public Works resumed work on the landscaping project 5/1. The raised planter, new plants, and gravel walks made the backyard very attractive. Unfortunately, someone vandalized all their hard work the evening of 5/12 and broke off the new ornamental tree, rooted up the plants, and destroyed the new sod. A police report has been filed. C. Becky and Marsha met with representatives from Schindler Elevator 5/4 to try to resolve an issue about a service call not covered by the contract. D. The women’s and men’s restroom had water issues 5/8. E. Orkin was called because of an ant infestation in the break room downstairs. F. Honeywell performed routine maintenance on the HVAC 5/11. G. The Beautification Committee planted red, white, and purple flowers in the backyard planters 5/17. H. Al checked the wi-fi signal 5/17 after a patron reported a problem. The problem turned out to be the patron’s laptop, not the signal in the building. I. Mary conducted a walk through with Fidelity Cleaners 5/19. J. The Activity Room floors were buffed 5/19. II. COLLECTION A. Book orders have been sent weekly. B. Cd (adult music) and dvd (adult feature film and non-fiction) orders were placed during the month. C. A large number of like-new paperbacks have been added to the collection in time for summer “beach” reading. III. PROGRAMS A. The Friends met 5/1 with 11 members present. B. The Library Board met 5/2 with 6 members present. C. Two field trips for pre-school classes were entertained in the Children’s Department 5/3. D. The last bulk loan was returned from the schools 5/18. Thanks to the Police Department and the Public Works Department for making the program a success. E. The Library Board met 5/18 for a work session with all members present. F. The Immaculate Conception School classes visited the Library during their regularly- scheduled times during the week of 5/22-5/26 for the last time of the current school year. G. Marsha visited North Park Elementary School 5/31 to promote Summer Reading Club. IV. TECHNOLOGY A. Work on CybraryN continues. Al removed administrative rights from the Queue 5/15, and since then, the Queue appears to be working. Logging out to the “bliss” screen and time- outs are still being monitored. B. The wi-fi signal was surveyed on 5/5. It was strong and covered more area than originally anticipated. C. Aleksandr switched out the old monitor in the print room 5/5. V. STAFF A. Becky and Mary Caven met 5/4 to write the draft of the Locations Committee report. The draft will go to the whole Committee for input and corrections after their meeting scheduled for 5/24. B. Becky participated in NIMS (National Incident Management System) training with other City employees 5/17. Former Columbia Heights Fire Chief Charlie Thompson taught the first class. All supervisory employees will eventually receive this training. C. Becky attended the ILS meeting at the County 5/18. D. Becky and Marsha met with the Pages 5/23 to negotiate summer schedule. E. Becky met with Marlene Moulton-Janssen and Todd Mahon 5/24 to discuss how the three agencies can work with the Minnesota Digital Library to digitize portions of their historical collections. F. Marsha, Kelly, and Becky met with the summer Volunteens 5/24 to set up their schedules. VI. FOUNDATION A. The Foundation Board did not meet in May. VII. MISC A. A MELSA crossover use survey was conducted 5/15-5/20. B. The first anniversary of going live, online with SIRSI was celebrated 5/17 with pizzas for all the staff courtesy of a gift from the estate of former Anoka County Library Director Bev Flaherty. Another highlight of the day was the visit by the SIRSI Circ Committee (Sue Webb, Ellen Carlson, and Judy Soule) who demonstrated tips and shortcuts and brought treats. C. Delivery changed to Monday-Wednesday-Friday effective the week of 5/29. D. A young child caught his fingers in the elevator door 5/24. Nancy Soldatow did an excellent job of handling the situation and completing all the necessary paperwork.
