Rebecca Loader, Library Director SUBJECT: April operational report DATE: April 28, 2006 I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE A. The windows were cleaned 4/7. B. All Safe serviced the fire extinguishers 4/10. C. Orkin performed routine maintenance 4/19. D. The tree in the courtyard had to be removed after it was tagged as diseased. Public Works will continue the landscaping project from last fall and will replace the tree. The Beautification Committee will be doing their planting in May. E. Fidelity polished the floors in the Activity Room 4/28. II. COLLECTION A. Starting 4/19 staff will be checking “intransit from” and “instransit to” reports for the building on a weekly basis. B. 4 paperback and 5 hardcover book orders were placed during the month. C. Weeding of the adult paperbacks continues as the books are shifted into the new racks. D. Donations continue to come in at a heavy rate. Staff is adding pertinent titles and saving others for the book sale in June. III. PROGRAMS A. National Library Week was celebrated the week of 4/2-4/8 with the theme “Change Your World @ Your Library.” Guessing contests were held on both floors. B. The Friends met 4/3 at the Dragon House restaurant. C. The City Hall display case featured the Library during the month of April. D. The Library Board met 4/4 with all members present. E. The bulk loan was delivered to the schools 4/6. F. The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party 4/8 was a grand success. Thanks to everyone who made the program so much fun. G. Two Headstart fieldtrips came to the Library for special programs 4/19. H. The Library participated in both tornado drills on 4/20. I. The Fire Department presented a special preschool storytime 4/25. IV. TECHNOLOGY A. The Locations Committee met all day 4/5 to finish their complex assignment. Consensus was reached and Mary Caven will be compiling the results in a report. B. CybraryN continues to have its ups and downs. Al installed a patch 4/6. C. Wireless Internet access went live/online 4/18. The installation was complete about 4:45 p.m., and the first user logged on at 5:05. We have observed people in the room with laptops every day. The signal extends to the parking lot and across the street. The “Wireless Hotspot” signs have generated a lot of questions. V. STAFF A. Training for the three new Pages was completed 4/20. They will each work three days as a “shadow” before starting in the regular schedule. B. Becky attended the Public Service meeting 4/6 at Johnsville. Karen Hand, retired ACL Librarian, stopped by the meeting for a surprise visit. C. Becky attended a demonstration of Freedom of Speech about adaptive technology at LSS 4/11. D. Joanne Peterson celebrated her second anniversary as a Library employee in April. E. Becky attended the ILS meeting at the County 4/20. F. Jeanine participated in a cable shoot 4/26. VI. FOUNDATION A. The Foundation Board met 4/12 with all members present. B. The Board will present two appreciation awards at the 4/24 City Council meeting. The award for individual service will go to Mary Ann and Gerry Herringer, and the award for business service will go to Heights Theatre’s owner Tom Letness. VII. MISC A. Major Projects. a.
