Rebecca Loader, Library Director SUBJECT: November operational report DATE: November 30, 2005 I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE A. Completion of the landscaping project has been put on hold until the spring. The front yard (facing north) has all the plantings completed and the bedding rock installed. The side yard and back yard are not finished. B. The windows were cleaned 11/18. C. The Activity Room floors were buffed 11/18. D. Honeywell responded to a service call about heating issues on the lower level 11/21. The dampers were adjusted to accommodate the changing weather and needed fresh air exchange. E. Mary conducted a walk-through with Fidelity Cleaners 11/29. II. COLLECTION A. The Library resumed sending in our misses for cataloguing the week of 11/14. B. Year-end orders have been submitted for dvd’s, cd’s, paperbacks, and regular books. Electronic database subscriptions have been renewed for 2006. C. The 2006 Fodor’s order was placed. D. Weeding is behind schedule. E. Three major projects concerning the collection have been identified for 2006. a. Pull out the adult mystery, science-fiction, and western items from the general adult fiction and shelve them at the beginning of the fiction. b. Interfile the dvd’s and videos and move the juvenile titles into the Children’s Department. c. Shift the adult reference to accommodate changes in holdings and move the Consumer Research Center to a better location. III. PROGRAMS A. Three sessions of preschool storytime were held during the month. B. The Library Board met 11/1 with six members in attendance. C. The bulk loan was delivered to the schools 11/3. D. The Friends met at the Dragon House Café 11/7 for a luncheon. E. Immaculate Conception School classes visited the Library during their regularly-scheduled times the week of 11/14. F. Dakota Wild Animals presented a program 11/15. IV. TECHNOLOGY A. Preparations for the replacement of Netshift on the public access workstations and the installation of a pc management system (CybraryN) are proceeding. Quotations for necessary cabling have been obtained, and installation will occur in December. Hardware selection and ordering are also in process. B. On 11/23 the Qwest circuit that provides the Columbia Heights Public Library access to the ILS went down about 1:00 p.m. Al was able to get a repair ticket issued quickly, and the building came up by 2:15 p.m. Staff used off-line circ, and Beth was able to accommodate our Internet patrons at Mississippi. Going down the day before Thanksgiving was interesting! Thanks to everyone who responded so quickly and kept downtime to a minimum. V. STAFF A. Marsha made a presentation to a high school class 11/9 on early childhood reading and guidance. B. Becky participated as one of the graders for the Columbia Heights Police Department Community Service Officer applications. Three graders score blind essays in various pre- identified categories. th C. Jeanine celebrated her 19 work anniversary with the City. D. Nancy Soldatow toured the Work Force Center 11/29 as part of the sessions set up by Jim. E. Becky attended various meetings on pc management and the ILS. VI. FOUNDATION A. The Foundation Board met 11/16 with all members present. Final plans were made for the 12/18 fundraiser at the Heights Theatre, and items for the silent auction were reviewed. Tickets and posters were delivered to various local businesses by Cliff and Tom. VII. MISC A. Major projects a. Work sessions and documentation for the proposed 2006 Library budget. b. Serials and newspaper entry clean-up. c. PC management. d. Wi-Fi. e. 2005 budget projections. f. Preparation of 2006 seasonal plan document for major projects. g. A MELSA crossover survey was conducted 11/14-11/19.
