Rebecca Loader, Library Director SUBJECT: June operational report DATE: June 30, 2005 I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE A. Honeywell serviced the HVAC and changed the filters 6/1. B. Andrew Pappas repaired and tuned the Library’s piano 6/8 so it could be used in the “Tell Me More” program C. Honeywell cleaned the boiler and shut it down for the summer 6/8. D. Honeywell worked on the air conditioning 6/9 and 6/10. E. Orkin performed routine pest control maintenance 6/18. F. Fidelity buffed the Activity Room floor 6/23. G. Fidelity has assigned a new cleaner to the Library starting 6/27. II. COLLECTION A. A DVD order was placed. B. Several book orders and paperbacks orders were placed late in the month. Because of the cataloguing and acquisitions modules coming up after the circulation modules in the new ILS, orders were held deliberately. Kelly, Joanne, and Jeanine are all working hard to learn the new procedures. C. The magazine mending project was finished by the Pages 6/23. III. PROGRAMS A. Summer Reading Club started 6/1 with the themes “What’s Buzzin’ @ the Library” and “Tune in @ the Library” B. The Library and Independent School District #13 co-sponsored an author visit by Rick Chrustowski, author-illustrator of children’s books, on 6/1. Mr. Chrustowski presented copies of his books to the Columbia Heights Sister Cities Organization to donate to the Lomianki Public Library during their visit in the fall. C. An ESL group toured the facility 6/2. D. The Library Board met 6/7 with all members present. E. The Friends set up for the Booksale 6/7 and held the preview 6/8 with the sale on 6/9. The Friends made $1,879.45, and the Library made $455.80. F. The TNT (Teens’ program at Recreation) groups visited the Library twice during the week of 6/13 to do research for a mural they are painting on the history of Columbia Heights. G. “Tell Me More,” the storytelling program funded by an MRAC grant, started 6/14 and is meeting twice a week. H. Three Wacky Wednesday programs were held: the Minnesota Zoo (6/15), Magical Mia (6/22), and Bruce the Bug Guy (6/29). I. Three Funtimes were held: “Going Buggie in the Garden (6/16), “Fairyland Fantasy” (6/23), and “Picture This” (6/30). J. The Library Board, staff and volunteens participated in the Jamboree Parade 6/24. IV. TECHNOLOGY A. Becky attended several meetings about the various aspects of the ILS during the month. The OPAC committee met to discuss various customizations, and Heather did a great job of implementing the changes agreed upon. Progress on SVA (Perfect Paul’s replacement) has also been made. Patrons have really responded to being set up with email notices, and staff has entered countless email addresses. B. Columbia Heights Public Library staff helped Heather and her IT staff with two data clean up projects. C. Two upgraded pc’s were installed for staff use 6/13. The increased memory was needed to run Workflows. D. Chousau upgraded the Workflows clients 6/14. V. STAFF A. Becky attended the Library Operations Council meeting 6/2. B. Becky and Kelly met with Mark Trunzo, Baker & Taylor representative, 6/2 to discuss ordering and new services. C. Marsha visited the schools the week of 6/16 to promote Summer Reading Club. th D. Kelly Olson celebrated her 13 anniversary as a City employee in June. E. Becky participated in the Jamboree planning meeting 6/9. F. Summer schedule for the Pages started the week of 6/13. G. The staff honored Amanda Blaise, Library Page, who graduated from Columbia Heights High School in June, at a breakfast 6/16. H. Jeanine participated in a cable shoot 6/30/05. VI. FOUNDATION A. The Foundation Board met 6/15 to make final plans for the Jamboree peanut sale. They also put together an agenda for the September retreat and discussed the MRAC grant program and the December fundraiser at the Heights Theatre. VII. MISC A. Major projects: a. Implementation of the ILS. b. Summer vacation schedule. c. Preparation of the proposed 2006 Library budget. B. Saturday hours changed to 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. 6/11. C. Mary Caven, Interim Director of Anoka County Library brought Marlene Moulton-Janssen, newly-appointed Director of ACL to the Columbia Heights Public Library 6/13. Marlene met the staff and toured the building. D. The 2006 proposed Library budget was submitted 6/21.
