HomeMy WebLinkAboutOperational Report from Marsha To: M. Rebecca Loader, Library Director From: Marsha Tubbs, Children’s Librarian Subject: September 2005 Operational Report Date: September 29, 2005 I. PROGRAMS A. ICS classes resumed monthly visits. We will be servicing middle school classes this year for the first time in a long time due to the fact that ICS instituted an Accelerated Reader program at the end of last year. In 2005-2006 we will be seeing 11 classes and 233 students once a month. Bulk loan to area schools resumed this month. At this time we are providing nine classrooms with “mini” collections every four weeks. This is a collaborative effort between the schools, the library, and the police department who kindly provide the services of a CSO and vehicle. II. COLLECTION A. The staff began using the COHNEWBOOKS option this month and to date have placed close to 90 picture book titles on the account. We will be adding JFiction to the account within the first week of October and will make use of the COHDISPLAY option for our current displays of ABC, 123, and bilingual books at that time as well. B. I have been busy placing book orders in an effort to catch up the backlog from May and June when cataloging and receiving services were unavailable. Juvenile selection tools are caught up to May at this time. C. Placed an order to Listening Library for the last of our standing order contract for 2005. D. Placed a large order for Graphic Novels. These items are so popular that within 48 hours of placing them out to circ, nearly all of the collection was off the shelves. III. PROJECTS A. Tom Sherohman and I prepared the final evaluation of the MRAC grant for submission by October 5. We will begin processing an application for 2006 over the next two weeks. B. Teen Read Week preparations are underway. We are looking at a Book Swap option and a drawing for GET REAL promotional materials. Staff has prepared two booklists to accompany the program “REAListic Fiction” for young adults and REALlife (biographies). C. A meet and greet the author (John Koblas) is scheduled for October 22. Mr. Koblas is an authority on Minnesota history, especially the James Gang and is currently writing a mystery series for young people based on historic Minnesota events and people. He will be giving away autographed copies of some of his books. D. Storytime registration is down from our normal 30 to 40 people (combination of adults and children). The decrease is due in large part to ECFE offering of programs for this age group at the same time and day care providers who have opted to take advantage of certain programs provided elsewhere. This means that for the first time in a very long time we will be providing storytime to parents and children only. We currently have 14 children registered (total of 28 including parents) E. Staff has begun preparations on promotional materials related to the Foundation’s fundraising event in December. We will have posters, flyers, and tickets (in draft form) for the Foundation to critique at their next meeting October 12. Library Aide, Cristy Tombarge is the front-runner on this project at this time. IV. BUILDING MAINTENANCS A. Fidelity was scheduled to buff the floors on 9/22 after hours. As we were closed on that date, we are awaiting word from Fidelity regarding rescheduling. B. I evaluated furniture and equipment within the department looking to place items in the City auction. At this time the children’s department has nothing available but I will be looking at some AV items for next year. V. TECHNOLOGY A. Children’s Department Clerk, Kelly Olson met with TSD Director, Lynne Wiess for training regarding a serials data clean up project. Kelly will devote up to 4 hours per week, beginning October1, until this project is complete. VI. STAFF A. PAGES ?? Processing of books received ?? Creating book order forms ??
