Columbia Heights Public Library registered 484 children in the ”What’s Buzzin’ at the Library” program and 205 teens in the “Tune In at the Library” program. B. We had 1,074 people attend summer programs (other than Storytime) at the library in 2005 (820 children and 254 adults). Another 178 adults and children attended the Storytime and Crafts sessions held each Thursday morning. C. The Graphic Novels received a sizeable increase in the collection with a large order of new and replacement titles. This collection has become very popular with teens and the shelves are often nearly depleted. This month’s order should remedy that situation. B. Staff and volunteers placed mystery and fantasy labels on appropriate titles within the J and YA collections. They also labeled the ABC and 123 books within the easy collection. ABC’s and 123’s are currently on display as part of a “Get Ready to Read” promotion for the month of September. We will be participating in the nationwide PLA/ALA campaign promoting the use of library cards “Smartest Card …Get it, Use it”. C. Pages completed the paperback mending project and are currently involved in mending and cleaning easy picture books. III. PROJECTS A. The Tell Me More program came to a close on August 3 with the first Shareformance attended by 62 people. Response from those in attendance was extremely positive. Comments like “Who is that little girl with the BIG voice”, “Who knew they could write like that”, “What a great program, my (daughter/son) has gained so much this summer”, were common among those in attendance. The crowd was amazed at the talent represented within the group, but more importantly was the enthusiasm exhibited by the teens. All (100%) stated that they would gladly return to the program next year. B. American Girl “Nellie’s Birthday Surprise” was a huge success again this year. This was the seventh year for this program and again we had a waiting list of anxious young ladies hoping to be able to attend. The girls created three crafts relevant to the historical time period: cross stitch, beading, and a floral headband. They all attended a surprise birthday party in Nellie’s honor and sang happy birthday to Nellie. The big question of the day was “Which character are you doing next year?” C. The coordinated efforts of Anoka County Children and Family Council and the Library as a part of CLIP (Communities and Libraries in Partnership) introduced 41 young people from three “special” neighborhoods to summer reading. Three school based team workers spent four days a week with children reading aloud for a minimum of 30 minutes each day. Children were encouraged to read at home and those who finished reading five books over the summer participated in a field trip to Bunker Beach and the wave pool courtesy of Anoka County Parks Department. IV. STAFF A. Pages completed the paperback mending project and began the easy mending project. They processed several large book orders and relabeled the shelving for graphic novels. The pages also aided in the preparation of order cards. B. Cristy Tombarge, Library Aide prepared a PowerPoint presentation as a part of the TMM program. She printed the August edition of the Sampler (Library Newsletter), aided in the preparation of American Girl invitations and program materials, and filled in for Library Clerk’s Jeanine Schmidt and Kelly Olson during their summer vacations. Cristy also began work on a Spanish language booklist and participated in the 2005 American Girl program. C. Kelly Olson, Children’s Department Clerk prepared certificates and invitations for the Volunteer Recognition, participated in the American Girl program, placed several book orders and completed the 2005 annual report brochure. Kelly also spent time invoicing new materials that have been ordered since June of 2005 and aided in the creation of new informational brochures on ANOKAT and PIN numbers.
