Rebecca Loader, Library Director SUBJECT: August operational report DATE: August 31, 2005 I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE A. Public Works completed a list of minor maintenance chores at the Library 8/1. B. All the floor mats were picked up and professionally cleaned the week of 8/2. C. Comcast replaced parts of the cable equipment 8/2 and 8/3 to improve the quality of the picture. D. Honeywell checked the hot water heater 8/8. E. Schindler Elevator performed routine maintenance on the elevator 8/25. F. The windows were cleaned 8/26. II. COLLECTION A. A huge DVD order was placed. Due to the difficulty in obtaining materials on videocassettes, money budgeted for videos has been transferred into the DVD account. B. Marsha placed an order for graphic novels (replacements, filling out series, and duplicates of high-demand titles). C. Two paperback and two “catch-up” hardcover orders were placed. III. PROGRAMS A. The Library Board met 8/2 with all members present. B. The “Tell Me More” Shareformance 8/3 was attended by over 50 people and showcased the writings and talents of the young people who participated in the program. It was amazing to see how the group had become a team. C. The American Girl Tea Party, “Nellie’s Birthday Surprise,” held on 8/11 was filled to capacity with girls and dolls. D. The summer volunteers were recognized at a special reception in their honor 8/18. They received certificates and small gifts presented by Library Board President Barbara Miller and City Council Member Bruce Nawrocki. E. The new teachers at Independent School District #13 toured the Library 8/23 and listened to a presentation by Marsha and Becky on available services. F. Marsha met with the Immaculate Conception School teachers 8/31 to discuss available services. G. Summer Reading Club ended 8/31. IV. TECHNOLOGY A. A patch was installed on the server 8/2 and the clients at COH were upgraded 8/4. Acquisitions will now share the same client as WorkFlows. B. The CPU from COHPC 6 (OPAC station on main floor) was stolen 8/3. A police report has been filed, but there is little chance of recovering it. A replacement was ordered and installed by Al Rautio 8/23. Locks have been installed on all six of the OPAC stations. C. The Intranet was upgraded 8/9. D. Heather customized the receipts that print at Columbia Heights on 8/10 to include phone numbers and Website information. E. Becky attended a presentation on Wi-Fi 8/25 at the County. F. Becky met with Marlene Moulton-Janssen, Heather Hessel, and Donna Welsh 8/25 to discuss cataloguing charges and to open discussion about the ILS contract. V. STAFF A. Page training started 8/9. Sarah Doepel, Gretchen Edholm, and Keri Erickson completed training 8/19 and worked two weeks for “real” experience before joining the regular schedule in the fall. Joanne commented that SIRSI is easier to teach than DRA because people are so comfortable with the Windows environment. B. Becky attended the ILS meeting 8/11 and the OPAC meeting 8/25. C. Jenna Stromquist returned to college 8/19. Jenna worked over the summer to fill vacant Page hours on the schedule and helped with two data clean-up projects. D. Becky met with Bill Elrite, Finance Director, 8/22 about the 2006 budget PowerPoint presentation. Cristy will be working with Becky on this project. E. Dana Weigman, Library Supervisor, celebrated her 18-month anniversary during the month. F. Becky met with the Pages 8/23 to negotiate fall schedule. G. Jeanine participated in a cable shoot 8/30. VI. FOUNDATION A. The Foundation Board did not meet in August. B. The Foundation Board and Library Board will hold a retreat 9/10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. VII. MISC A. Major projects a.
