COLLECTION A. Staff spent the month of July shifting collections to maximize space. We shifted the easy collection, the young adult collection, and the magazines. B. A large Baker & Taylor order was placed and the BWI standing order was updated. C. Staff began a paperback mending project and completed the mending of magazines. III. PROJECTS A. Summer Reading Club participation is up this year. We currently have 646 total participants in three separate programs (Tune in @ the Library, What’s Buzzin @ the Library and CLIP). This is an increase over the last two years due in part to the extra promotional efforts put out through the school district and the CLIP program. Records show the highest participation level in Summer Reading Programs occurred in 1989 when 814 children participated (see attached). Average registration by decade : Decade Registration Total 1980 -1989 589 1990-1999 728 2000-2004 634 B. The Tell Me More program will be coming to a close next week. The participants have thoroughly enjoyed the program and instructors report that they have all advanced considerably. Parents are reporting exceptional improvement in their child’s writing abilities, self-esteem, reading and vocabulary levels. The program has received unanimous parental approval and I am very pleased that the library had an opportunity to offer such a high quality program. I am hoping that we will be able to repeat the program with some minor changes in scheduling next year but I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves. C. Volunteers continue to be a major support for all of our summer programming. To date the library volunteers have contributed 386 hours in preparation for programs. Plans are underway for a volunteer recognition event in late August. D. Wacky Wednesday programs concluded this month. Seven separate programs were provided and each consisted of a professional performance given by performers selected by MELSA. Average cost per performance $150-$175. Nearly 1000 people attend the seven performances held in 2005. E. The summer Storytime and Craft session also came to a conclusion this month. Nearly 180 adults and children attended the Thursday morning programs. This program is popular with families due in large part to the crafts created by children with the help of parents or caregivers and taken home following the sessions. Many families report they retain the crafts produced by older children as family keepsakes. IV. STAFF A. Children’s Clerk, Kelly Olson has been very busy this month. She finished setting up predictions for serials in workflows and received a huge backlog of magazines. Kelly also began tackling on-line ordering and invoicing which has required reentering of past invoices (since May), entering and receiving al new orders on-line. The on- line ordering process at this time is more time consuming and as all aspects of the ILS brings with it a certain learning curve. Kelly sent and received two large book orders, completed the layout and typesetting for the Sampler, designed and printed posters for our weekly programs and began work on the annual report for community distribution. B. Library Aide, Cristy Tombarge has been filling in at the circulation desk and receiving deliveries for others during their vacation absences. She aided in the preparation of the American Girl materials including invitations, posters, crafts and craft instructions. Cristy also began a clean up project and is inventorying our program supplies in preparation for end of the year orders. Cristy has also been recording the progress of Summer Reading Club Registrations and developed a set on Excel documents to record current and past reading club statistics. C. Pages began mending the paperbacks this month and have been busy with summer reading programs in the evening and weekend hours. We shifted the easy collection and the young adult hardcover books to create some additional space and will be shifting the quartos in August.
