DISCUSSION
The meeting was called to order by Chairman Hol]om at 7:03 P.M.
Hollom explained that because of the poor economy last year, the Park
Board, after careful consideration, had decided to close some of the skating
rinks. After this decision was sent to the City Council, the Mayor directed
the Park Board to leave all of the rinks open. Because of this change of
direction, there was a ]ate start in preparing the rinks for o~ening, causing
some initial poor conditions on some rinks.
Since we face the same situation this year, the Park Board wanted input
from the community before any type of action was taken.
Hollom read a letter from John Tiggas, Director of Recreation, stating
what rinks he would like to see open for use in the hockey programs this
year. He also mentioned in the letter that the Columbia Heights Hockey
Association uses two'rinks on a regular basis for their practices.
This was followed by a questions and answer period with the residents present.
The general consensus of those present was to have all of the rinks remain
open. But also, if there is a definite need to close any, that the following
rinks be considered: Hilltop, Prestemon and LaBelle.
The public hearing then ended and the Park Board, along with Salsbury and
DeMars, moved into its Budget hearing.
