Board of Park Commissioners
Regular Monthly Meeting
Monday, December 16, 1963
Mr. John. ~rzyn, Superintendent of Parks, entertained (furnished Hershey bars).
The Meetin~ was called to order by John Rak at 8:00 P. M.
MENBF2~ PRESENT: John Pmk, Marvin Super, Don Lewis, Frank Novotny
MEMBERS .~BSENT: Don Welch
Doz~ Lewis, in absence of Don Welch, acted as secretary. Since all
members had received copies of the previous meeting, the Chairman made
no call for their reading~at this time.
Jokm ~rzyn read a letter, which was written to the City Council,
requesting an expendlturelof not more than $750.~0 on lumber for a warming
house, to be built at McKenna Park. The Kiwanis Club will D~V the
carpenter bill. John Murzyn said that he would suggest to the Junior
Chamber that they p~¥ a reasonable ~hare of the above materials bill in
lleu of a public s~dress system which they have offered to ~onate. The
Board members informally agreed to the above plan.
Johm Murzyn explained that the Columbia Heights Lions Club has requested
permission to set up a barbecue pit on the Field House lawn, ~ter removing
a sufficiently large area of grass to forestall grass damage during their
field da~ in July. Theywould later replace the grass.
Di~cussion of this request disclosed the follo~g:-
1. A~r radical disturbance of an established lawn might cause a
persisting and s~gravating damage, even beyond the barbecue area.
2. The committee in charge of food preparation might conceivably
negotiate this vital function in the picnic area where the necessary
fsmilities exist and %Where no charges will be needed.
*. Acc.uiesce with the above request could well esta'bll~ a precedence
to embarrass the Board in the future.
4. The Columbia Heights Lions Club is one of the commendable and
cooperating organizations of our community;, the Board desires to assist them
in an2r =easonable degree.
A ~otion by Levis, with a second by Super and euickoassage, laid the
request on the Park Superintendent~s table with future action indicated
as soon as additional infor~nation on the matter becomes available.
Meeting was adjourned,
Don ~ewis
