COLUMBIA HEIGHTS PARK & RECREATION COMMISSION AUGUST 24, 1993 PAGE TWO OLD BUSINESS HUSET WEST BASKETBALL COURT Winson questioned whether the Commission wanted to continue the use of the basketball court at Huset West. They agreed to continue with the basketball court. It was questioned whether the basketball hoop could be lowered. Winson also stated that the complaints regarding late night basketball playing at Circle Terrace have stopped since the lights have been turned off. SILVER LAKE BEACH WRAP UP A memo was handed out to the members regarding the attendance at Silver Lake Beach for the last three years. Casey stated that because of the cool and wet weather the attendance was low. It was brought up that there were 25 ears at the beach tonight and the temperature was 85 degrees. It was reported that Big Lake does not have a life guard on duty and as long as the area is posted it was not necessary to have a guard on duty. Casey said this might be something to consider. Several ideas were brought up to attract more kids to the beach - add basketball hoops - add sand volleyball courts. REPORTS Casey will send budget materials to the members before the next meeting. Budget meeting with City Council is scheduled after the September meeting. The proposed pre-engineered building will be recommended for the 1995 budget. Casey is waiting for information from the school district. He is considering touring different areas to get ideas on the building. A coach's certification program will be started this fall and is being partially funded by the Boosters. The fall programs have started and flyers were handed out to the members. If members are interested we could have a table set up for questions on Recreation programs or questions on parks at Bootstrap Days. The Boosters have contributed $6,000 to Park Department - bleachers and benches were purchased, it was requested that a thank you note be sent to the Boosters. COLUMBIA HEIGHTS PARK & RECREATION COMMISSION AUGUST 24, 1993 PAGE THREE City Council has approved the purchase of 1 pick.up and 1 tractor. Huset East Tennis Courts will be overlaid in the next few weeks. Bid requests have gone out for redoing the Huset West Tennis Courts and the Sullivan Lake Tennis Courts. Huset volleyball courts are almost done and the sand is in. Sullivan Lake Park picnic shelter has experienced a lot of vandalism. City Council has approved the selection of HNTB to do the construction drawings and specifications of LaBelle Park pond rehabilitation. Work to start late fall or early winter. Still waiting for a reply from Builder's Square regarding fencing for Circle Terrace. Property owner at 1332 - 45 1/2 Ave. (next Keyes Park) requested our City Forester to remove a tree. City Forester declined to remove the tree because it was not diseased nor did it present a hazard. A member questioned whether or not a plaque had been placed at the Huset Park ice skating rink indicating the Lions and the Boosters had contributed to the rink. Mainline railroad acquisition will be held up but immediate action to remove the spurs can be done as there is no objection to it. Commimion Members: It was requested that Winson investigate the basketball court at Gauvitte (blacktop in bad condition). Congratulations were given to Dick Petkoff on his reappointment to the Commission for his term which will expire April of 1998.
