HomeMy WebLinkAboutFebruary 24, 1993 CITY OF COLUMBIA HEIGHTS PARK & RECREATION COMMISSION FEBRUARY 24, 1993 The meeting was called to order by Chairman Bill Hollom at 7:00 p.m. ROLL CALL Members present: Bill Hollom, Dick Petkoff, Pat Grady, John Murzyn, Gary Peterson, Mark Casey, Director of Recreation, Mark Winson, Public Works Director/City Engineer Members absent: Jim Fowler, Bob Ruettimann CONSENT AGENDA The following items were on the consent agenda. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Move to approve the minutes of the January 27, 1993 meeting as presented in writing. APPROVAL PAYMENT OF BILLS Move to approve payment of bills as listed from the proper funds. REQUEST HALL/HUMAN SERVICES COMMISSIONER Move to ratify the action of the Recreation Director in allowing the Human Services the use of the hall on February 17, 1993 with the fee being waived. REQUEST MEETING ROOM/BONNIE JEWETT Move to approve the use of the Ostrander/Senior Center for a meeting of the Minnesota Chapter of Professional Secretaries International on Thursday, May 6, 1993 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with the fee being waived. REQUEST LABELLE LOUNGE & KITCHEN/DAY CARE PROVIDERS Move to allow Arnita Loegering the use of the LaBelle Lounge and kitchen on Tuesday, April 6, 1993 from 5:30 - 9:00 p.m. for nutrition training for licensed day care providers with th~ f~ being waived. CONSENT AGENDA Motion by Murzyn, second by Petkoff to approve the consent agenda. Ail ayes, motion carried. COLUMBIA HEIGHTS PARK & RECREATION COMMISSION FEBRUARY 24, 1993 PAGE TWO REOUEST HALL/COLUMBIA HEIGHTS POLICE A late request was received from Terence Nightingale, Explorer Post Advisor, requesting the use of the main hall on April 7, 1993 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The Explorer's are having a lecture and demonstration for their group and Explorers from other cities. Officer Nightingale also requested that the fee be waived. Motion by Grady, second by Peterson to approve the use of the hall on April 7, 1993 from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. for the Columbia Heights Police Explorer Post and to waive the fee for this event. OLD BUSINESS Peterson reported that he attended a Booster meeting to request funds for Hilltop Park and at that particular meeting the Boosters received requests for $123,000 and only had $7,000 to dispense. However, they did table the request and felt that in a couple of months the financial situation would be more favorable. REPORTS PARKS - SKATING RINK ATTENDANCE Winson gave the members an attendance sheet for the skating rinks. He stated that the average attendance had come down with the exception of Huset Park. Although we did not have an attendant at Hilltop Park skating rink the Supervisor did do daily spot checks. It was reported that on 2 separate occasions there were 7 and 5 skaters at that park the balance of the days was 0 skaters. Ail skating rinks will close on Monday, March 1 for the season. Staff is requesting permission from the City Council to let bids for some 1993 equipment. Replacement equipment will include a 4 wheel drive pick-up and tractor. TOUR OF THE PARKS & SUMMER MEETINGS A decision on a date to tour the parks and a decision on whether or not to have the summer meetings held at the park buildings will be made at the March meeting. ANNUAL REPORT Commission members commented on how the Recreation Department has grown this past year. They also stated that the senior program has flourished and is a result of the excellent leadership of Karen Moeller. COLUMBIA HEIGHTS PARK & RECREATION COMMISSION FEBRUARY 24, 1993 PAGE THREE RECREATION PROGRAMS UPDATE - 2nd Annual Easter Egg Hunt will be held at Keyes Park on April 3rd. - A Free Baseball Clinic for all children in the House League will be conducted on May 22, 1993. - Camp Heights (summer playground) will start in June and run until August 6th. Activities include swimming at Silver Lake Beach, crafts and sports. - Cub baseball will be offered during the afternoon this summer for all 11/12 year olds teaching the fundamentals of the game. - A Super Sign Up Night will be held on March 31st - which will give us an indication on numbers. - Adult Softball this season will all be one night leagues. Casey reported that staff is considering putting in a "picture" area outside Murzyn Hall. With so many weddings at the hall the idea of an area for picture taking is being considered.
