HomeMy WebLinkAboutSeptember 23, 1992 CITY OF COLUMBIA HEIGHTS PARK & RECREATION COMMISSION SEPTEMBER 23, 1992 The meeting was called to order by Chairman Bill Hollom at 6:30 p.m. Bill Hollom, Jim Fowler, Pat Grady, Dick Petkoff, Gary Peterson, John Murzyn, Mark Casey, Director of Recreation Members absent: Bob Ruettimann, Mark Winson, Public Works Director, City Engineer Also present: Carol Prey, Volunteer Coordinator, Don Jolly, Superintendent Public Works CONSENT AGENDA The following items were on the consent agenda. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Move to approve the minutes of the August 26, 1992 meeting as presented in writing. APPROVAL OF PAYMENT OF BILLS Move to approve payment of bills as listed from the proper funds. LETTERS AND REQUESTS REQUEST HALL/COLUMBIA HEIGHTS HOCKEY BACKERS Move to allow the Columbia Heights Hockey Backers the use of the hall and kitchen for a spaghetti dinner on Wednesday, October 21, 1992 from 12 noon to 9:00 p.m. with the fee being waived. REQUEST HALL/MN DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION Move to ratify the action of the Recreation Director to allow Minnesota Department of Transportation the use of the hall on Wednesday, November 4, 1992 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. with the fee being waived. APPROVAL OF CONSENT AGENDA Motion by Fowler, second by Peterson to approve the consent agenda. All ayes, motion carried. ROLL CALL: Member present: COLUMBIA HEIGHTS PARK & RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES SEPTEMBER 23, 1992 PAGE TWO REQUEST CANCELLATION/MARQUETTE BANK NORTHEAST The Commission received a letter from Kenneth C. Sheehan, President of Marquette Bank Northeast, requesting cancellation of the proposed rental date on Wednesday, September 16, 1992. The reason for the cancellation was that there was no response for this free square dance offered the seniors in northeast Minneapolis. As there was no inconvenience or cost to the Recreation Department, motion by Petkoff, second by Grady to refund the down payment. It was also requested that we inform them that it is not our policy to return the payment unless the hall is re-rented, however, because of the circumstances involved, we ~,~ making an exception in this case. Ail ayes, motion carried. REQUEST HALL/ALL NIGHT PARTY On behalf of the 1993 Columbia Heights Senior Class Ail Night Party, Mark Lou Brunkow, Co-Chairman, is requesting the use of the hall on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, June 7 - 10, 1993. She is also requesting that the rental fee be waived for this period of time. The school district had given staff June 3, 1993 as the date for graduation and staff had reserved those dates for the Ail Night Party. Monday and Tuesday nights, June 7 and 8, had previously been reserved by the Columbia Heights Lions. Motion by Peterson, second by Petkoff to approve the request for the Ail Night Party with the dates to be worked out with the Recreation Director. Ail ayes, motion carried. REQUEST MATHAIRE/MCKENNA ROOMS/COLUMBIA HEIGHTS FIREFIGHTERS Motion by Fowler, second by Grady to approve the use of the Mathaire/McKenna rooms for the Columbia Heights Firefighters on Saturday, January 16, 1993 with the rental fee waived, however, if security is needed, the security fee will remain in force. Ail ayes, motion carried. REQUEST HALL/COLUMBIA HEIGHTS PUBLIC SCHOOLS William R. Steff, Student Council Advisor, delivered a letter to the Commission requesting the use of Murzyn Hall from 8:00 am - 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 20, 1992. Central Middle School is hosting the Regional Student Council Leadership Conference on this day. COLUMBIA HEIGHTS PARK & RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES SEPTEMBER 23, 1992 PAGE THREE Motion by Fowler, second by Petkoff to approve the request for Central Middle School on Tuesday, October 20, 1992 from 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. with the fee being waived. Ail ayes, motion carried. OLD BUSINESS PROPOSED SKATEBOARD PARK A copy of a letter to the City Manager explaining the reasons that the Commission is not in favor of a skateboard park was included in the agenda packet. Hollom stated that he thought the letter represented the Commission's philosophy and was a good representation of the meeting. NEW BUSINESS GARDENING PROJECT Carol Frey, Volunteer Coordinator, attended the meeting in order to give the members information on the volunteer gardening project. A three year plan is being implemented to make the City of Columbia Heights a more beautiful place to live and work. Ms. Frey requested the members to invite any interested parties to be a part of the planning group. REPORTS RECREATION Casey - Reported on Bootstrap Days - 320 score cards were turned in. The five Recreation experience (baseball, basketball, football, golf and hockey) were highly attended. Youth Expo was held on September 10, with 25 organizations in attendance. The purpose of the Youth Expo was to acquaint youth and families with youth programming available in Columbia Heights. Casey and Pat Bundy, Youth Program Coordinator, worked at the construction of Castle Heights playground. The fall programs (soccer, mini soccer, football, flag football, cheerleading) have all started. Due to additional teams, soccer games are needed to be played at Huset #3. COLUMBIA HEIGHTS PARK & RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES SEPTEMBER 23, 1992 PAGE FOUR The Columbia Heights Boosters have purchased a scoreboard for Northwestern Electronics Institute's west gym. PARKS Jolly Paul Pfaff is going to be the skating supervisor 1992/93 skating season. for Work is being done on McKenna pool. The pool was losing water and after investigating it was discovered that the copper tubing around the pool had dissolved. They hope to get the work done this fall. Money is being set aside for repairs of Mathaire Pool next year because they expect plumbing replacements. Huset skating rink - Kathy Young, Assistant Engineer, is waiting for a report on where to set the footings for the end of the bridge. Bids for electrical work at Huset skating rink are going to City Council for award on Monday, September 28, 1992. Commission members The members are requesting a full report on the progress of Huset skating rink by the next meeting.
