ROLL CALL Members present: Eileen Evans; Jerry Foss; Bruce Magnuson; Gary Peterson; Dick Petkoff; Bob Ruettimann; Keith Windschitl, Recreation Director; Lauren McClanahan, Public Works Superintendent Members absent: James Nelson Also present: Karen Moeller; Julie Dehmer; Marti Madsen; Bill Antzaras CONSENT AGENDA The following items were on the consent agenda. APPROVAL CONSENT AGENDA Motion by Evans, second by Magnuson to approve the consent agenda. Ail ayes, motion carried. LETTERS AND REQUESTS REQUEST TO USE EDGEMOOR ROOM FOR TAE KWON DO CLASS/MARK KOWAL Members discussed the request from Mark Kowal to use the Edgemoor Room for Tae Kwon Do classes on a contract basis rather than paying a flat room rental fee. Members felt that the city is at some liability because Tae Kwon Do is not a Recreation program, nor is it a program of Kim's Tae Kwon Do Center. Members agreed that all renters should be treated equally with no special privileges extended to any certain group. The Recreation Director was directed to discuss the matter with the City Attorney and Mr. Kowal and develop a recommendation to be discussed at the next meeting. THANK YOU LETTER/DAVID BEHLOW, SUPERINTENDENT OF COLUMBIA HEIGHTS HIGH SCHOOL. Members reviewed the thank you letter received from Superintendent David Behlow regarding the fu'eworks display on October 3, 1997 at Columbia Heights High School. THANK YOU NOTE/CAROLE BLOWERS, CITY ADMINISTRATION Members reviewed the thank you note from Carole Blowers, City Administration office, regarding the Munici-Pals Banquet held at Murzyn Hall on October 9, 1997. Members thanked the Recreation Director for the frae job he did in making improvements to Murzyn Hall prior to the banquet. PAGE TWO OLD BUSINESS PARK PLAQUES Members reviewed information from the Public Works Superintendent showing several options for materials that could be used for park plaques. Members directed the Public Works Superintendent to research some pricing options and report back at the next meeting. CHANGES TO JPM MANAGEMENT PLAN Members reviewed the revisions made to the JPM Management Plan. These revisions have been approved by the City Council. LIGHT BY PARKING LOT AT GAUVITTE PARK Commission Member Foss reported back to members on the request received for a light to be provided in the parking lot at Gauvitte Park. His recommendation is that the existing light be put on a timer, as was previously discussed. NEW BUSINESS DONATION OF COVERED TRAILER/ST. MATTHEW'S LUTHERAN CHURCH Members discussed the donation of a covered 4'X6' trailer from St. Matthew's Lutheran Church for use by the Recreation Department and/or the CHASE Program. The trailer could also double as a puppet wagon. The trailer is in good condition and pulls on a standard trailer hitch. The city mechanic will inspect the vehicle and if it is found to be in good condition, the Recreation Director will make a recommendation to accept the donation. MEDTRONIC GRANT Members reviewed the Medtronic Foundation grant application to be used for the Arts in the Parks Program and the CHASE Program. The application was submitted on October 15, 1997. Staff should be notified of the results in January, 1998. OTHER NEW BUSINESS The Recreation Director gave members the proposed seasonal employee wage schedule. The document has been condensed from last year's version and reflects some increases. REPORTS RECREATION DIRECTOR The Recreation Director reported that the new security system has been installed and is operational in Murzyn Hall PUBLIC WORKS SUPERINTENDENT The Public Works Superintendent reported that the installation of protective fencing around the player benches at Huset #3 is completed. Members complimented staff on the quality of the work on the project and the speed at which it was completed. Crews are repairing hockey rink boards at Ramsdell Park. COMMISSION MEMBERS No report at this time. ADJOURNMENT Motion to adjourn by Ruettimann, second by Foss. All ayes, motion carried.
