II. COLLECTION
A. Staff spent the month weeding the J and EJ paperback collection. Weeding of the YA paperback
collection will continue in February. Collection development of all paperback areas will follow the
weeding process sometime in March.
B. Placed a large book order with Baker and Taylor this month and a smaller order with Kubitz Educational.
C. Added a number of donated titles to the collection. Thank you to staff member and evening supervisor
John Brosnahan for facilitating those donations.
III. PROJECTS
A. I am pleased to announce collaboration between the Library and School District 13. Special thanks to
Assistant Superintendent, Kathy Kelly for arranging partial funding for the project. On June 1, three
elementary schools will have the opportunity to host a visit by author/illustrator Rick Chrustowski. Rick
will spend the entire day in Columbia Heights visiting schools during the day and meeting the public that
evening at the library.
B. I Love My Library Because… This is one of two promotions being offered during the month of February
(I Love to Read Month). Patrons (adults and children) will have the opportunity to complete a valentine
message which begins with the words “I Love My Library Because…”, upon completion of the message
the patron receives a chocolate kiss or sucker and an entry into a drawing for a Barnes and Noble gift
certificate.
C. Reading Begins Early is the second promotion being offered in February. Displays will include early
literacy brochures in English or Spanish and booklists and posters encouraging reading to infants and
preschoolers. Brochures will also be made available at ECFE, COH preschool, Kindergarten classes, and
the Columbia Heights clinic.
D. Registration begins February 21 for the library’s Read Across America Read-A-Thon scheduled for
March 2. Patrons will be encouraged to sign up to read aloud (10 minutes to 1 hour) on that date from
10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
E. The first of several “Grandparent’s Tea and Storytime” is scheduled for February 12. This program is a
collaboration between the Library and the Senior Center. Karen Moeller, Senior Coordinator graciously
arranged for representatives from the Senior Center to aid in the production of the tea portion of the
program. Staff member and evening supervisor, Dana Weigman, will provide a storytime prior to tea.
The Valentine Tea is scheduled for February 12 at 1:00 p.m. Registration is open to grandparents and
grandchildren (ages 5 to 9).
F. Winter Reading Program began on January 18. Families are encouraged to register (adults and children).
Reading records keep track of time-spent reading. Drawing for prizes will be held in March. We have 14
signed up at this time.
All program information has been forwarded to local schools for inclusion in school newsletters thanks to
the cooperation of area media specialists. News releases were forwarded to local and metro newspapers.

G. The school district is preparing for the next round of 21 Century Grant applications. I have contacted
Kristen Gast regarding whether or not the library will be a part of this application process. She has
requested that I complete an information sheet outlining the programs, grade levels, etc. and include any
information which might influence the decision.
IV. MEETINGS
A. I attended the SIRSI site visit on January 19 at the request of the Library Director. The visit included a
PowerPoint presentation giving a breakdown/overview of the steps and tasks involved in implementing
the new Integrated Library System.
B. The Anoka County Library Teen Program committee met on Monday, January 24 to prepare for summer
2005. As a result of this meeting I will be preparing a portion of the recommended books on CD/tape
listing for distribution across the County and preparing a portion of the trivia questions utilized as part of
the “Tune in at the library” theme for teen reading in summer 2005.
C. Met with ILS committee members on January 27 to aid in mapping the COH collection as a part of
preparing for the May 17 migration.
V. STAFF
A. Pages aided in the weeding of the paperback collections, created order cards and checked orders, and
prepared flyers and brochures for programs and displays.
B. Library Aide, Cristy Tombarge, aided in the preparations for storytime, set up a Black Literature display,
and prepared materials for I Love to Read month.
Children’s Department Clerk sent and received four separate book orders, prepared the library newsletter
for publication, prepared year end statistics for annual reports, sent out contracts to summer performers,
designed and processed two booklists and a winter events calendar for publication. Prepared the final
copy of an early literacy (Spanish) brochure to send to the printer.
