II. COLLECTION
A. Staff completed the weeding of the audiocassette collection. We retained a number of single
copies from this section as they are still circulating. I estimate that the audiocassette area will
need to be weeded again in 2006.
B. Submitted two large book orders by mid-month. Materials were received the week of
December 20thus completing book orders for 2004.
III. PROJECTS
A. The Columbia Heights Public Library Foundation is the proud recipient of a Minnesota
Regional Arts Council (MRAC) grant for 2005. The grant will fund a project we are calling
TMM (Tell Me More). The project will bring Neighborhood Bridges (Children’s Theater) into
Columbia Heights to work with local teens. Teens will learn the art of storytelling along with
dramatic reading and writing techniques from Children’s Theater professionals. I am thrilled
and excited about being able to offer such a high quality program to Columbia Heights youth.
Thank you to the Foundation for their outstanding fundraising efforts.
B. Staff has prepared two brochures promoting early literacy. One brochure in English the other in
Spanish. This is our first venture into bilingual promotional literature and involved
considerable effort in locating qualified translators. Included with the brochures are three
separate suggested reading lists, one for each level of preschool literacy. Columbia Heights
staff also prepared the booklists. The early literacy materials will make an appearance in
February 2005 (I Love to Read Month) as a part of a reading begins early promotion.
C. Preparations are underway for the “Garfield’s Tracking Down a Good Book” winter reading
th
program. Registration begins January 18. The program continues through March. Local
schools will be promoting the reading program along with the in-school programs which begin
in January.
IV. MELSA
A. MELSA- CYP (Children’s and Young People) committee decided not to wait for MLA-CYP
LSTA grant outcome and will be moving forward with plans for regional training. A
subcommittee has been established and will meet in January 2005.
V. MEETINGS
A. Anoka County Library Children’s Librarians met on December 14 to share storytelling
techniques and new titles that worked well for storytimes in 2004. I received a listing of the
recommended titles and have placed orders for those titles COH does not own.
