Rebecca Loader, Library Director SUBJECT: December operational report DATE: December 30, 2004 I. Building Maintenance and Equipment A. A new permanent cleaner was assigned to the Library by Fidelity Cleaners effective 12/1. B. Mary conducted a walk-through inspection with Fidelity Cleaners 12/9. C. Honeywell changed the filters in the HVAC equipment 12/9. D. Fidelity buffed the activity room floor 12/10. E. Comcast sent out a repair person to work on the reception on the Library Cable channel 12/14. F. The windows were cleaned 12/15. G. Orkin performed routine maintenance 12/15. H. Heights Electric checked the emergency doors, alarms, the emergency back-up lights downstairs, and the exit signs. Since one exit sign had to be replaced, an LED model was installed. II. Collection A. Staff worked hard at clearing out all the old charged/assumed lost records from the database. B. Staff also worked on areas of the collection to weed and to check for lost items. Completed subject areas include: 1. Adult fiction 2. Videos 3. Business/Consumer/Minnesota reference Areas still in process: 1. Reference 2. Audio cassettes C. Becky changed the large print standing orders for 2005 and submitted new purchase orders to Gale (Thorndike). D. Year-end orders for books, DVD’s, cd’s, videos, and audio cassettes were all placed and received. III. Programs A. The bulk loan was delivered to the high rises 12/1. This program will be discontinued next month due to lack of interest by the agencies involved. B. Two sessions of “Skipping Saturdays” storytime were held 12/4 and 12/18. C. ICS classes visited the Library during their regularly-scheduled times the week of 12/6-12/10. D. The Friends met 12/6 with eight members present. E. “Merry Holiday Storytime” was presented 12/7. F. The Library Board 12/7 with all members in attendance. G. The Library Board attended the Board and Commission appreciation banquet 12/8. H. Project Bookshelf ended 12/10. 128 books were collected and distributed through SACA. I. The bulk loan was delivered to the schools 12/16. J. “A Merry Wiggly Holiday” was presented 12/21 in the Activity Room. K. “Holiday Magic with Brian Richards” was held 12/29. IV. Technology A. The network cut-over for the Library’s connection to the County was scheduled 12/12 and went smoothly. B. Work continues on the contract with SIRSI for the new ILS. C. Becky worked with Aleksandr, Heather, and Al to prepare for the hardware add- ons and changes that need to occur before the ILS can be installed in the building. V. Staff A. Jeanine participated in a cable shoot 12/1. B. Becky attended the Library Operations Council meeting at the County 12/2. C. Monica Johnson, page, resigned 12/6. There are currently two page vacancies. D. Staff attended the annual Employee Holiday party 12/15. Marsha received her 20-year service award, and Becky received her 30-year service award. E. The schedule for part-time supervisory staff was distributed for January through May. F. Staff completed the seasonal plan for departmental projects and submitted it to the City Manger. VI. Foundation A. Marsha and Foundation President Tom Sherohman presented a grant proposal to the Minnesota Regional Arts Council (MRAC) Board 12/11. Marsha and Tom worked very hard on this grant and were awarded 58 out of 60 possible points for their efforts. Official notification of the award was received 12/20. The project entitled “Tell Me More” is a collaboration between the Library and Neighborhood Bridges (Children’s Theatre) to give teens a venue to tell stories reflective of their lives. The project culminates with a public performance at Murzyn Hall at the end of summer 2005. B. The Foundation received a generous contribution from the Columbia Heights Athletic Boosters in December. Kudos to Board member Cliff Shedlov for his advocacy of the “Whole Child” and his presentation on behalf of the Foundation. VII. Miscellaneous A. Major projects 1. ILS 2. 2005 proposed budget 3. Collection maintenance B. Granny’s Closet set up a collection point in the Library during the month. They collected new clothing for distribution to mature women in need. C. Anoka County Waste Management put up a “Recyclable Christmas” display 12/2. D. On 12/13 the Library Board helped to host a small reception in honor of out-going Mayor Julienne Wyckoff. Julienne has been a very dedicated liaison to the Board and has assisted with numerous projects and programs. E. The 2005 proposed budget was approved at the City Council meeting 12/13. The amount of staff time that went into the preparation of the budget and the presentations connected to its passage was extremely high in 2005. Becky would like to express her appreciation to all those who assisted and a special kudos note to the Library Board members who gave so much support to her at meetings. VIII.
