September operational report

I. Building Maintenance and Equipment
A. Honeywell changed the filters in the HVAC 9/20. The heating system was
prepped for winter and is ready to go.
B. Mary conducted a walk-through inspection with Fidelity Cleaners 9/28.
C. The road re-construction project on Jackson Street has taken longer than
anticipated due to weather and complications which have arisen during
demolition. Paving will hopefully take place the week of 9/27. The temporary
water service was disconnected 9/13 and regular service was restored.
II. Collection
A. Becky met with Judith Blanchard from the Polish-American Library in Northeast
Minneapolis. Judith donated five books on Polish culture and history to the
Library.
B. The Large Print rotation occurred 9/29.
C. A large print order was placed 9/22. This order fills in areas not covered by the
Library’s standing orders.
D. An adult paperback order was placed 9/9.
E. The magazine renewal subscription was checked, reviewed, and submitted to
Finance.
F. DVD’s, videos, cd’s, and audiocassettes were received during the month.
III. Programs
A. Bulk loans were delivered to the high rises 9/1.
B. The Library Board met 9/7 with all members in attendance.
C. The ICS classes visited the Library during their regularly-scheduled times during
the week of 9/13.
D. The Friends met 9/13 with nine members present.
E. The Foundation Board met 9/16 with three members present.
F. An ESL level 4 group took a tour of the Library 9/16.
G. As part of a County-side effort, a 4-H informational meeting was held 9/20 in the
Activity Room. 4-H bookmarks were distributed by staff in conjunction with this
meeting.
H. The first session of “Skipping Saturday” storytime, conducted by Library
Supervisor, Dana Weigman, was held 9/25.
I. The Sister Cities Group in Columbia Heights put up a display in honor of Polish
American Month (October) on 9/29.
J. The first bulk loan of the school year was delivered 9/30.
IV. Technology
A. Work on replacing the acs shifted into high gear in September. The consultant,
Pat McClintock, spent 9/1 and 9/2 with the Evaluation Team (Mary Caven,
Heather Hessel, Becky Loader, and Judy Soule) in order to process the material
provided by the vendors and the reports of the Task Forces. Using an evaluation
system with weighted, defined values, the Team narrowed the field to two
vendors. Site visits were scheduled at Scott County (SIRSI) and Minneapolis
Public (Innovative Interfaces, Incorporated) for 9/21 and 9/28. Demonstrations
by the vendors will be held in October. Work on preparing the scripts for the
vendor demonstrations and the feedback forms for the participants continues.
B. Becky met with Heather to discuss the proposed changes in the network to
accommodate an ILS. The Library Board will consider an addendum to the
existing automation contract at their October meeting.
C. Aleksandr had the City network tested in the Library 9/8 to locate and to correct a
few areas of concern.
V. Staff
A. Becky was one of the speakers at the 9/1 “Talk-to-the-Mayor” session. She gave
a brief history of the Library and explained various services available to patrons.
B. Marsha attended ICS’ teacher orientation 9/2.
C. The three new pages completed training 9/14 and all passed their tests 9/15.
Amanda Blaise, Peter Hastings, and Monica Johnson joined the regular work
schedule on 9/17.
D. Jeanine participated in a cable shoot 9/29.
VI. Foundation
A. The Foundation Board met 9/16. Tom Sherohman presented information on a
Minnesota Regional Arts Council (MRAC) grant that is available to non-profits.
Tom will follow up on the grant with Marsha.
VII. Miscellaneous
A. Major projects:

B. Delivery changed to Tuesday-Thursday-Saturday effective 9/7.
C. A MELSA crossover use survey was conducted 9/23.
