August operational report

I. Building Maintenance and Equipment
A. Orkin performed routine quarterly maintenance 8/18.
B. The street project caused a back-up in the pipes to the Library’s water meter 8/19
which resulted in a leak in the storeroom. The fast reaction of Alicia and Elaine
saved all the supplies that were in danger.
C. The Activity Room floor was buffed 8/24.
D. Fidelity began to use a new type of carpet spot cleaner on an experimental basis.
E. The windows were washed 8/26.
F. Honeywell serviced the boiler 8/26 in preparation for the winter heating season.
II. Collection
A. The fiction weeding project was completed 8/13. This project took nearly a year
to complete.
B. Several book orders were placed. A standing order plan for Juvenile books-on-cd
started.
III. Programs
A. Two field trips for the CLIP grant participants took place 8/2 and 8/16. This
program has been a success due to the hard work of coordinator Stacey Lerum.
B. The Library Board met 8/3 with five members present.
C. The American Girl program, “Tea with Samantha” was held 8/17 with a capacity
crowd in attendance. The success of this program is evident in all the smiles seen
around the Library. Thanks go to all the generous supporters of the American
Girl program.
D. The new teachers in Independent School District 13 toured the Library 8/23 as
part of their orientation. Marsha and Becky made presentations on services
available and the history of the Library.
E. Marsha and Becky met with the pages 8/23 to negotiate fall schedule.
F. The summer teen volunteers were honored at a small reception 8/26. They
received certificates and small gifts from the Library Board.
IV. Technology: ACS and City LAN
A. The month of August has been packed with ILS Task Force meetings. Anoka
County Library received four RFP’s from vendors by the deadline of 8/13.
Becky is working on the Evaluation Team to narrow the field to two finalists.
After the consultant’s site visit, arrangements will be made for vendor
demonstrations. Hard work by all the people involved has kept the project on the
proposed time line.
V. Staff
A. Becky participated in a team-building session with the City Council and upper
management staff. Led by Don Salverda, the work session produced a goals
document, new mission statement, and a code of conduct for meetings.
Assignments will be made to staff after the various documents are adopted by the
Council.
B. Dana Weigman reached her 6-months anniversary in August. Dana will be
working with Marsha on a special storytime series in the fall.
C. Interviews for the vacant page positions were held the week of 8/9. Becky
conducted 13 interviews. Amanda Blaise, Peter Hastings, and Monica Johnson
have been hired and will start training 8/30.
D. Jenna Stromquist returned to college in Chicago 8/14. Becky really appreciated
her willingness to work over the summer months to fill in many vacant slots in the
page schedule.
VI. Foundation
A. Foundation President Tom Sherohman made a presentation at the August
Boosters’ Meeting. The Boosters are considering a donation.
B. Marsha met with Tom Sherohman 8/25 to discuss potential grant opportunities.
VII. Miscellaneous
A. A MELSA crossover use survey was conducted 8/20.
B. The Columbia Heights Public Library staff attended Staff Development Day
sponsored by the Anoka County Library on 8/27 at Bunker Hills Activity Center.
C. Major Projects

2. ILS project.

4. Proposed 2005 budget review.
