II. COLLECTION
A. I evaluated the donated materials for inclusion in the collection and sorted the remaining
materials and passed them on to area schools. The District 13 Media Specialists were thrilled to
get them.
B. Placed our first standing order with Listening Library for books on CD. After checking the
circulation figures for the last year, I am even more confident that we made the right choice in
going with CD format and discontinuing our audiocassette purchases. Audiocassette materials
are showing a definite decline in circulation.
C. Placed two book orders this month. Each order contained largely J and YA fiction. I will need
to place an order for easy materials before the end of the year and take a close look at the non-
fiction collection for updating some areas.
III. PROJECTS
A. Fall program planning is well underway. We have two possibly three programs planned for
teens in October (Teen Read).
??
Pam Nelson (Nelson Success Group) author of the Recharged woman will be
recharging teens on October 19.
??
Teens will also be invited to solve a murder mystery on October 22. “Death Gets a
Red Card” will give registered teens the opportunity to determine who murdered a local
soccer player.
??
A teen scrap-booking seminar is tentatively scheduled to be held the afternoon of
th
October 20.
B. Fall storytime planning is well under way. Registration opens September 13 for our weekly
Tuesday and Wednesday morning programs. We are also considering a Saturday storytime
hosted by staff member Dana Weigman. Should these materialize they would be held every
other Saturday beginning late September of early October.
C. Special storytimes are being planned to coincide with the fall holidays of Halloween,
Thanksgiving, and all the December events. These would be evening storytimes open to
families.
D. We are also working on “The Smartest Card” promotions for the month of September (Library
Card Sign Up Month) and special programs for National Children’s Book Week (November 15-
21).
IV. VOLUNTEERS
A. Plans are underway to treat our summer volunteers to a luncheon and gifts on behalf of the City
and Library Board. This year’s volunteers have been a joy to work with. They represent the new
face of Columbia Heights, as they are a varied and diverse group. The 2004 teen volunteers
consisted of immigrants from Africa, India, Tibet, Mexico, and Somalia. They each brought
with them a unique vision of life in Columbia Heights especially as it relates to books and the
library. I have learned a lot working with them this summer and thank each of them for their
time and efforts.
V. STAFF
A. Pages have been working on a variety of program preparations including registrations for reading
clubs, invitations and crafts for American Girl, and crafts for storytime. Transactions for the
adult fiction project are nearing completion and preparations are underway to begin transactions
on the young adult fiction collection.
B. Cristy Tombarge, Library Aide, spent the month of July preparing for the American Girl
program. Cristy also printed the library’s newsletter, forms, and flyers. She has been aiding in
the compilation of statistics related to circulation and program registrations.
C. Kelly Olson, Library Clerk, finished the annual report and printed copies for distribution,
designed and printed American Girl invitations and posters, posters for Tuesday performances,
and prepared Library Board packets in the Adult Clerk’s absence. She also sent and received
two book orders, and received and added magazines for the month of July.
