Rebecca Loader, Library Director SUBJECT: June operational report DATE: June 30, 2004 I. Building Maintenance and Equipment A. The windows were cleaned 6/1. B. Honeywell replaced the filters and the belts on the HVAC units 6/1. C. Honeywell shut the boiler down 6/3 for cleaning and inspection. D. A pick-up truck discharged a large quantity of motor oil into the Library parking lot 6/21. E. Jackson Street is being reconstructed as part of a large street project over the summer. Parking has become a critical issue as Minnegasco crews have started their portion of the project. Crews are being very considerate of the Library and our programs, but there is still a lot of confusion. Staff will all be glad when the construction is finished. II. Collection A. The adult fiction weeding project was completed through “J”. B. Three book orders and two paperback orders were placed. III. Programs A. Summer Reading Programs started 6/1 with heavy registrations. A combination of very appealing artwork and very effective classroom presentations by Marsha and Kelly contributed to such a positive reaction from the kids. B. The Library Board met 6/1 with all members present. C. Highland Elementary School brought students to the Library 6/2 for a field trip. D. The bulk loan was delivered to the senior high rises 6/2. E. Marsha visited classrooms at Central Middle School 6/3 to promote the Summer Reading Programs. F. The Friends met 6/7 at the Dragon House with 11 members attending. G. Summer schedule for the pages started 6/14. H. Three Tuesday Specials were held in June: 1. Science Museum of MN presents “Tracks and Traces” (6/15) 2. Bill the Juggler (6/22) 3. Ten Penny Tunes (6/29) I. Three Funtimes were held in June: 1. “Moose” (6/16) 2. “Fourth of July” (6/23) 3. “Pirates” 6/30 J. The Library Board, Foundation Board, staff, and volunteers participated in the Jamboree Parade 6/25. Special guest, Mr. Pat Proft, rode in a 1926 Model T owned by Cheryl Bakken. IV. Technology: ACS and City LAN A. Becky attended the ILS meeting at the County 6/2. B. Jeanine and Becky participated in the ILS meeting at the County 6/3. Consultant Pat McClintock was here for a site visit and talked with the group about the project to replace the automation system. C. Becky met with Heather, ACL Technology Supervisor, on 6/8 to see a demonstration of the filter that will be installed on the public work stations for CIPA compliance. D. The discharge terminal in the workroom continued to be plagued by problems. Al changed it out for a while to run tests, and Paul tested the cables. Hopefully, the problems were resolved. E. Cyber Patrol was installed on the six pc’s maintained by the City to meet CIPA compliance by 7/1. F. Becky is serving on two task Forces for the ILS project RFP review. She met 6/16 with the Public Access Task Force and 6/17 with the Circulation Task Force. The committees’ reports were submitted on time to the Project Review Group, which will consider and incorporate the appropriate data into the RFP. G. Jeanine’s pc was replaced 6/21. H. Becky met with ACL staff 6/22 to begin negotiations on the contract for the new automation system. V. Staff A. Becky attended the Jamboree meeting at Public Works 6/10. The Library’s unit in the Parade will include three motorized vehicles and a waking contingent. Pat Proft will join the staff in a Model T driven by Columbia Heights Community Development’s Cher Bakken. th B. Kelly celebrated her 12 anniversary with the City in June. C. Jeanine participated in a cable shoot 6/29. VI. Foundation A. Becky and Tom Sherohman were the featured speakers at the Golden Age Luncheon 6/3. They talked about the Foundation and the benefit 6/26 at the Heights Theatre. B. Cliff and Sharon Shedlov and Tom Sherohman volunteered at the open house at the old Columbia Heights High School 6/6. Money raised from the salvage of parts of the building will be split between the Foundation and the Community Center Fund. C. The Foundation Board met 6/10 and 6/24 to prepare for the 6/26 benefit. D. The benefit showing of “Wrongfully Accused” on 6/26 at the Heights Theatre drew an enthusiastic audience for the program and the silent auction. Everyone was very pleased with the outcome of the Board’s first benefit. VII. Miscellaneous A. On 6/5 Saturday hours changed to 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. for the summer. B. Long-time Library patron and supporter Fran Jensen was honored as 2004 Humanitarian of the Year by the Human Services Commission. Fran’s countless hours of volunteer work in the City span many years. C. A MELSA crossover use survey was conducted 6/19. D. Major projects: 1. Preparation of the proposed 2005 budget. 2. Task force review of sections of the RFP for the new automation system. 3.
