COLLECTION
A. Mending and weeding of the easy collection was completed in time for the book sale
thanks to some volunteer work provided by Library Page, Regina Jesse. As a result of
this weeding, we are missing some titles basic to an easy collection that were withdrawn
due to condition and heavy circulation. I will be doing some collection development in
this area over the summer months hoping to fill in those lost titles.
B. Additional paperbacks were added to the collection in preparation for the heavy summer
demand.
PROJECTS
A. Summer reading program preparations are complete. Every one who participates and
reads five books this summer will receive a free pass to Bunker Beach. Free passes to the
Oliver Kelly farm are available to anyone who signs up. A thanks to Heights Theater for
the donation of free movie passes.
1. Our youngest reading program is called "Goin' Fishin' Up North ifY ou Read
to Me". The program is open to kids who cannot read on their own. Staffhas
prepped a fishing pond for the little ones. They will have an opportunity to fish
for prizes as they read throughout the summer.
2. "Track it Down at Your Library" is the MELSA program offered this summer.
This program is being offered statewide. We will be registering kids going into
grades 3 through 5 in this program. Staffhas established a north woods
campsite within the department with a tent to relax in and numerous incentives
to keep youngsters interested in reading this summer. Alas, the bear cave did
not make the campsite. The foam insulation company that was going to create
this architectural wonder for us had to cancel due to insurance liabilities.
3. "Gear Up at The Library" is the title of the 2004 teen program. This
program will be offered statewide as well this year due to a grant
received by MELSA. We are set to register for this program on both
floors. The main lobby will house a display ofY A materials throughout
the month of June and a volunteer will aid staff in registration.
B. With the help ofCristy Tombarge, Library Aide, I developed a Power Point
presentation to take to the schools promoting summer reading at the Columbia
Heights Public Library. Kelly Olson and myself visited all elementary classes the
last week in May. I will be visiting CMS on June 3 to speak to 6th grade classes.
C. Plans for Funtime/Storytime 2004 have been finalized. We currently have ten
children registered for a program that doesn't begin until June 16.
D. Weare already receiving calls requesting registration for the American Girl
program scheduled for August. Registration does not begin until June. The
department is really feeling the loss of the summer program aide position.
Preparations for American Girl are behind schedule at this time but I hope to
catch up in July after the rush for our reading program registrations settles down a
bit.
E. The Children's Department has established a collection of board games. The
games will be available for use within the building. Patrons can check them out at
the circulation desk in the Children's Department. Tables will be set up for game
playing in the activity room whenever the room is free. Staff and volunteers will
monitor activity in the room.
F. Booklists promoting summer reading have been prepared. Thanks to Dana
Weigman for the north woods series, John Brosnahan for the recommended young
adult titles (being used county-wide). The Children's Department also created a
Read-A-Likes booklist series being used in conjunction with the "Gear Up"
program this summer.
IV. MEETINGS
A. I attended the final preparation meeting for summer reading at LSS on May 6
2004. Notes from the meeting are attached.
V. STAFF
A. Library Aide, Cristy Tombarge, put the final touches on the Power Point
presentations, prepared a paper mache fishing pond, established a new book
display within the department, printed 1500 flyers for distribution to the schools,
promoted the library newsletter, prepared the north woods express train for the
department bulletin boards and printed multiple forms, registration sheets, and
identification tags.
B. Kelly Olson, Library Clerk, aided the Library Foundation in preparations for the
upcoming fundraiser, prepared copy for the June Sampler, sent and received
numerous book orders, aided the Librarian in researching crafts for
Storytime/Funtime, prepared masters for bulletin board pieces, and prepared final
layout and design for numerous booklists. Kelly also spent time scanning photos
to be included in the Foundation's historical scrapbook.
