I. Building Maintenance and Equipment
A. The lighting project in the adult reading room was completed 5/20. The
difference is amazing! For the first time, staff can read the call numbers on the
bottom shelves in the corners of the room without squinting and/or using a
flashlight. Funding was arranged through a special program sponsored by Xce1
Energy.
B. The Library's venerable typewriter bit the dust 5/4.
C. The windows were cleaned 5/5.
D. The departmental copier required a service call 5/5.
E. The City's phone service went down briefly 5/5.
F. Honeywell replaced the compressor of the air conditioning unit above the adult
reading room 5/5.
G. The carpeting on both floors was steam-cleaned 5/8. The upholstered chairs in
the Children's Department were also cleaned.
H. The Activity Room floor was buffed 5/11.
I. Honeywell performed routine maintenance on the HV AC 5/12.
1. The sprinkler system passed its annual test 5/12.
K. Mary conducted a walk-through with Fidelity Cleaners 5/18.
L. The maintenance contract for the roof was renewed with Dalco for another year.
II. Collection
A. The large print rotation within the County occurred 5/26.
B. The bindery picked up a large order 5/26.
C. Large book orders were placed twice.
D . Weeding continues in the adult fiction.
III. Programs
A. Two preschool field trips visited the Library 5/3.
B. The Board met 5/4 with 5 members present.
C. The bulk loan was delivered to the high rises 5/6.
D. The Friends met 5/5 prior to the Booksale pre-sale 5/5.
E. The Friends' Booksale 5/6 was a success.
F. The ICS classes visited the Library during their regularly scheduled times 5/17-
5/21.
G. The bulk loan to the schools ended 5/20. Thanks to the Columbia Heights Police
Department for providing transportation over the school year.
H. Marsha and Kelly visited the schools to promote Summer Reading Club 5/26,
5/27, and 5/28.
I. Marsha, Kelly, and Becky met with the volunteers to negotiate summer schedule
5/26.
1. Metro North sent a class of students to tour the Library 5/27.
IV. Technology: ACS and City LAN
A. The hub for the ACS is failing. A replacement has been received and was
installed 5/26.
B. A consultant has been retained by ACL to assist in selection of a new automation
system. Staff has gathered information that will be used in the RFP. A site visit
has been scheduled for 6/3.

Cristy and Joanne participated in GroupWise training 5/4.
Marsha attended the Summer Reading Club meeting 5/6 at LSS.
Becky and Marsha met with the pages 5/18 to negotiate summer schedule. The
roster is short four people due to resignations. Jenna Stromquist, former page,
will work over the summer to cover the vacancies.
Alicia Cermak and Beth Gilles, pages, were honored at breakfast 5/25. Alicia
graduated from Dunwoody and Beth from St. Catherine's in the spring.
Jeanine participated in a cable shoot 5/26.
Becky has set the Library Supervisor schedule for the summer. The Library will
be closed three Saturdays around holidays over the summer (Memorial Day,
Fourth of July, and Labor Day).

VI. Foundation
A. Tom and Cliff folded and stuffed donation letters to be sent to local businesses
5/4. The donors will be recognized in the program for the benefit held 6/26.
B. The Foundation Board met 5/20 with five members present. Tickets are being
sold for the benefit 6/26. Pat Proft has donated an original framed poster used as
a prop in the movie to the silent auction. Publicity, interviews with Pat Proft,
posters, and the printed program were all discussed.
VII. Miscellaneous
A. Preparations and technical support for the Foundation fundraiser took additional
staff time during the month. Kelly's talent for creating posters and working with
graphics has been invaluable to the Board.
B. A MELSA crossover use survey was taken 5/7.
C. Delivery changed from Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday to Monday, Wednesday,
Friday for the summer months.
D. Major projects: Library Clerk training, vacation schedule, proposed 2005 budget,
2004 budget projections, Foundation Benefit, Jamboree parade unit.
