B. National Library Week.
The Children's Department celebrated National Library Week with a contest (guess the number of
bookworms in this container) and free activity sheets including mazes and color your own puzzles.
We also handed out "tell us your story" sheets and anticipate getting them back throughout May.
These sheets will become a part of a scrapbook containing photos and stories from patrons of their
library experiences.
COLLECTION
A. Weeding and mending of the easy collection began April 15. I anticipate that we will get
through the last half of the alphabet (J through Z) before the book sale. Many of the easy picture
books have been repaired extensively. It is time to discard the worn titles, replace them if they
are in high demand, and make room for newer titles.
B. I placed an order for additional paperback titles to meet the high summer demand. As a result,
our J paperback and Y A paperback collections have been updated. I am suggesting that we
change our standing order ship date to the middle of the month. It appears that we are nearly 30
days behind in entering the series titles due to our current ship date at the end of the month.
C. First quarter analysis of circulation statistics was submitted to the Library Director this month.
There are still some very puzzling things about these statistics but I was pleased to note that adult
paperback circulation is climbing, and juvenile and young adult statistics are also doing well.
Our easy collection is losing circulation; however, I think due to the shift in demographics, I will
be submitting an analysis each quarter throughout 2004.
III. PROJECTS
A. Funtime/Storytime planning is well underway. This storytime takes a great amount of
preparation due to the crafts provided to accompany the themes. Thus far we have four of the
required six themes and crafts prepared.
B. Class visits have been scheduled for the end of May. Power point presentations (three total) are
being prepared for use during the class visits. Kelly Olson, Library Clerk, and I will be visiting
all three elementary schools and I will be visiting CMS (dates yet to be scheduled).
C. Volunteers from 2003 met with library staff on April 28 to schedule volunteer hours for May
2004. This group will be starting early and working after school to help the staff prepare for
reading clubs this summer. The loss of the summer Program Aide position is being felt right
now. However I am hopeful that the volunteers will be able to take some of the pressure off
staff.
D. We will have three reading clubs running this summer: Goin' Fishin' Up North (a read to me
club for preschool through l8t grade), Track It Down @ Your Library (MELSA reading club for
2nd grade through 5th grade) and Gear Up At The Library (grades 6 and higher). Plans are well
underway to make these reading clubs attractive and fun for the summer months.
E. American Girl is scheduled for August 17,2004. We will be hosting Samantha's Tea party this
year. Funding for this program was tight until we received some generous donations recently.
At this time, we have made minimal preparations for this program.
F. Staff is also busy preparing booklists for summer distribution. We have designed a series
entitled North Woods Animals, North Woods Activities, North Woods Arts and Crafts. These
booklists should tie in nicely with the North Woods reading club themes.
G. Staff also prepared 18 wuzzles and cryptograms to be used countywide in the Gear Up At The
Library program this summer, thanks to the talents ofCristy Tombarge and Kelly Olson.
IV. MEEETINGS
A. Joined the Library Director in a performance review for Cristy Tombarge on April 18
V. STAFF
A. Pages have been busy checking selection tools, aiding in the weeding of easies, mending easy
books, and aiding in the preparations for upcoming programs.
B. Cristy Tombarge, Library Aide, prepared three separate power point presentations, printed all
materials related to National Library Week, prepared the activity sheets for National Library
Week, aided in preparation of National Library Week bulletin boards, printed flyers and the
April edition of the Sampler.
C. Kelly Olson, Library Clerk, ordered and received four large book orders from B&T, prepared
copy of the Sampler newsletter, prepared posters and application materials for Volunteers,
received and added magazines. Kelly did some review training with the pages on library cards
and collecting fees this month. She also presented two storytimes in my absence, prepared
monthly circulation, LIBGIS, and other reference data and aided in the preparation of the
National Library Week program materials. Kelly is currently preparing the North Woods
booklists (titles compiled by evening supervisors and myself), and the additional paperwork
involved with the summer programming (registration sheets, flyers, Bulletin Board pieces etc.).
D. Special thanks to John Brosnahan, Dana Weigman, and Nancy Soldatow (Evening Supervisors)
for their help in compiling titles for booklists.
