Rebecca Loader, Library Director SUBJECT: April operational report DATE: April 30, 2004 I. Building Maintenance and Equipment A. The windows were cleaned 4/5. B. Public Works responded to numerous small plumbing disasters over the month. C. Fidelity Cleaners performed a special steam-cleaning in the lower level restroom in an attempt to deal with a tenacious odor. D. The coin-op on the public service copier malfunctioned 4/10. The problem was fixed 4/12. E. The fire extinguishers were serviced 4/14. F. The City Council approved the lighting proposal for the Adult Reading Room offered through Xce1 Energy at their 4/12 meeting. The application was submitted, and the project will be scheduled as soon as possible. G. Honeywell responded to service calls 4/13 (basement HV AC fan), 4/16 (install replacement parts in pump motor), 4/21 (heat in Adult Reading Room and thermostat adjustment to Daylight Savings Time), and 4/26 (west rooftop unit compressor problem). H. Sharon Briley and Shari Alexon planted pansies in the courtyard planters 4/13. I. Schindler performed periodic regular maintenance on the elevator 4/16. 1. Orkin performed routine maintenance 4/21. II. Collection A. The romance paperbacks were weeded. B. Orders were placed for: dvd's, videos, books on tape, and books on cd. C. Four book orders were placed. III. Programs A. Mary placed a booksale display in the City Hall case 4/1. B. The Friends met 4/5 with 12 members present. C. The classes from ICS visited at their regularly-scheduled times during the week of 4/5-4/8. D. Eight sessions of preschool storytime were held. E. The Board met 4/6 with all members in attendance. F. The bulk loan was delivered to the high rises 4/7. G. Mayor Julienne Wyckoff issued a proclamation in honor of National Library Week at the City Council meeting 4/12. H. Marsha attended Kindergarten Round-Up at Valley View (4/13) and Highland (4/15). I. National Library Week was celebrated 4/19-4/24 with contests and related give- aways. 1. The bulk loan was delivered to the schools 4/22. K. Marsha was guest storyteller at the Highland Ice Cream Social for Books 4/22. L. Marsha, Kelly, and Becky met with the summer volunteers 4/28. M. Two special field trips for preschool programs were held 4/29. IV. Technology: ACS and City LAN A. Al Rautio changed out the ACS router 4/6. B. Becky attended the automation meeting at the County 4/7. Bev Flaherty reported on her conversations with vendors at PLA. Mary Caven announced that a consultant will be used to prepare the RFP for the new ILS. C. COHPC 13 developed operational difficulties 4/21, and Al installed a temporary replacement. The hub may be failing. v. Staff A. Becky attended the Library Operations Council meeting at ACL 4/1. Bev Flaherty reported on MELSA statistics and the 2005 budget preparation. Mary Caven updated the group on the automation project, CIP A, and the CLIP grant. Cristy Tombarge celebrated her second employment anniversary in April. Marsha met with Jack Kubitz 4/22 to discuss standing orders for juvenile books- on-tape and cd. Mary also met with Jack about adult titles on tape and cd. Becky attended the ACL Public Service meeting 4/22. The special guest was Heather Hessel, new ACL Library Technology Supervisor. Welcome to Joanne Peterson, who started 4/26 as the new Library Clerk. Jeanine participated in a cable shoot 4/27. B. C. D. E. F. VI. Foundation A. The Foundation Board met 4/14. Plans for the fundraiser in June are progressing. Details of the ticket sales and silent auction were discussed. The stationery has been ordered and drafts of the donation and tax letters were reviewed. VII. Miscellaneous A. The Police had to remove a man under the influence from the Library 4/1. B. Many thanks are extended to Debra Patrin, IRS tax form volunteer, for all her help with keeping the forms in order during tax season. C. A MELSA crossover use survey was taken 4/22. D. The Library participated in both tornado drills 4/22. E. Bev Flaherty brought new Library Technology Supervisor Heather Hessel for a tour of the Library 4/28. VIII.
