COLLECTION
A. Staff heavily weeded the boardbook collection this month and I placed an order for new materials to
update this section.
B. I am in the process of preparing a paperback order to bolster this collection in preparation for the summer
demand.
C. I placed a large book order to Baker & Taylor, including titles recommended by MELSA to accompany
the Summer Reading Club.
D. Kelly Olson, Library Clerk had nothing out of the ordinary to report regarding the magazine collection,
with the exception of one title change: Crafts is now Paper Crafts.
PROJECTS
A. Preparations are well underway for the 2004 Summer Reading Program (MELSA), Track it Down at the
Library. This year's program will be divided into two separate sections in the hopes of enticing additional
participation. Infants through I st grade (in the fall) will participate in a separate Read to ME program,
which we are calling "Gain' Fishin ' Up North (see section B). In addition we will be offering the Track
it Down at the Library program for children in grades 2 through 5 (in the fall). Participants in the Track it
Down at the Library program will receive a free wave pool pass after reading five books and chances to
visit our North Woods Cave or Ranger Station to select a token gift. Volunteers will be aiding the staff
with preparations beginning in May.
B. Gain' Fishin' Up North brings back the old fishing pond (with a couple of twists). Children participating
in this program will get the opportunity to "go fish" in the Library's fishing pond for small prizes. Once
they catch their fish they will receive a gift incentive of their choice. Children will also be able to feed a
fish upon each visit to the library. Larger prizes especially selected for "little bitty readers" will be
awarded each month.
C. Get Geared Up at the Library is the teen reading program for summer 2004. This program is open to
students grade 6 (in the fall) and up. Teens will be asked to read five books, and will have the
opportunity to participate in a bookmark design contest. In addition, each week the library will post a
puzzle to solve (Wuzzle or Cryptograph). Participants who bring the correct solution to the circulation
desks will be given a chance to enter future prize drawings. Each teen that registers for the program will
receive a free caribbeaner emblazoned with the program's title and a free wave pool pass after reading
five books. Larger prizes will be awarded at the end of the summer. To help kick start this program I am
planning a display ofY A materials for the upstairs lobby. The display will include a Get Geared Up self-
registration table. One of our teen volunteers will be on hand (through the month of June) to staff the
table. I am also preparing information kits for the staff to aid them in fielding the types of questions they
will receive at the circulation desks.
D. Volunteers will be contacted in April and invited to participate again in 2004. Volunteers will begin a
regular after-school schedule in May to aid staff in preparing for the upcoming summer programs.
Advertising for new volunteers will begin mid April. Projects in the works for the volunteers include a
twice a day (10 a.m. & 2 p.m.) read-aloud session called "Tales Around the Campfire" (staffed by
volunteers), aiding with the fishing pond, reading clubs, and staffing the upstairs Get Geared Up table.
E. We have a start on a board game collection for use within the building. Staff will be labeling the games
and preparing materials to log their use. I anticipate that this program will be ready for the public by
May.
IV. MEETINGS
A. I attended the final meeting of the Anoka County Teen Program Planning Committee on March 4 at LSS.
Plans were finalized for the Get Geared Up program. Materials are currently being produced for printing
in April.
V. STAFF
A. Pages checked donated books for addition to the collection, prepared bulletin boards, aided staff in
reading club preparations, processed several book orders, and aided the Library Clerk with magazine
labeling.
B. Cristy Tombarge, Library Aide, is in the process of creating a Power Point presentation on Summer Fun
at the Library. I will be using this presentation at our regular class visits the end of May. Cristyalso
established two new book displays within the department and has been aiding the adult stafftwice weekly
with the delivery process.
C. Kelly Olson, Library Clerk, sent and received several book orders, created the layout and copy for the
Sampler, prepared handouts, and promotional materials for National Library Week, and has begun
preparations for the Summer Reading Fun promotions.
