Rebecca Loader, Library Director SUBJECT: March operational report DATE: March 31, 2004 I. Building Maintenance and Equipment A. The Library passed the annual fire inspection 311. B. Honeywell changed the filters in the HV AC units 3/8. C. The windows were cleaned 3/9. D. Mary conducted a walk-through with Fidelity Cleaners 3118. E. Honeywell performed routine maintenance on the boiler 3/25. F. Becky prepared a proposal to replace the Adult Reading Room lighting through Xce1 Energy's Efficiency program. The City Council will review the proposal at the 3/29 work session. II. Collection A. Orders were placed for dvd's, cd's, and videos. Because of a theft problem, all rental dvd's are now in locked cases. B. Adult paperbacks were ordered and received. C. Collection development in the 300's is proceeding slowly. This area has been heavily weeded. III. Programs A. The Friends placed a display featuring artifacts from local restaurants and the book Minnesota eats out in the East Room display case 311. B. The Friends met 311 with 11 members present. Tom Sherohman, President of the Library Foundation Board, gave a presentation about the upcoming fundraiser and the related Jamboree display. Becky presented the Wish List, and members voted to purchase replacement floor mats for the main floor and cd browser bins for the Children's Department. The Friends will also make a donation toward the purchase of a new server for the automated circulation system. C. The Board met 311 with five members present. D. The Seussentennial 3/2 celebrated Dr. Seuss' IOOth birthday with games and special events. E. ICS classes visited the Library during the week of3/8. F. The bulk loan was delivered to the high rises 3110. G. The bulk loan was delivered to the schools 3118. H. Four sessions of preschool storytime were held during the month. I. Two special field trips of Heads tart children attended programs 3/25. IV. Technology: ACS and City LAN A. Becky attended the automation meeting at the County 3/3. Preliminary responses to Mary Caven's inquiry letter were received from five vendors (Dynix, GIS, III, SIRSI, and TLC). Copies were distributed so that committee members could familiarize themselves with the material and formulate questions for the vendors. B. Someone tampered with the monitor settings ofP AC #8 on 3117. AL was able to restore it to full functionality. C. The Library Board approved the Technology Plan at their 311 meeting. v. Staff A. Dana Weigman completed training as a Library Supervisor and started working on the regular schedule 3/8. Marsha attended a Teen meeting at the County 3/4. Becky reviewed applications for the vacant Library Clerk position with the City's Human Resources representative 3/8. Second interviews will be completed the week of3/29. The Pages received review training from Kelly on patron applications 3115 and 3116. Jeanine participated in a cable shoot 3/25. Becky met with Mark Trunzo, the Library's Baker & Taylor representative, on 3/30. B. C. D. E. F. VI. Foundation A. The Foundation Board met 3117. The Foundation will sponsor a fundraiser June 26 at 1 :00 p.m. as part of the Columbia Heights Jamboree. The Heights Theatre will show "Wrongfully Accused," a movie made by Pat Proft, and Mr. Proft and Tom Sherohman will present a special program before and after the film. Mr. Proft, who lived above the Columbia Heights Library at a previous location, uses many references to Columbia Heights in his films. A special display of photos and memorabilia from past Jamborees is being put together by the Board and will be on display at the Heights Theatre. VII. Miscellaneous A. Major projects in process include: 1. Staff recruitment, interviewing 2. Performance reviews 3. Long range planning and the NEI site redevelopment 4. Submission of articles for City newsletter B. Debra Patrin, IRS volunteer, worked 6 hours during the month to assist patrons in finding the correct tax forms. C. The State version of the Annual Report was submitted 3118. LDS reported that there is a "bug" connected to it, and they cannot review it. Staff is waiting for the problem to be resolved by the vendor's customer support team. D.
