III. COLLECTION A. Weeding and mending of the EJ paperbacks is complete. R Weeding of the Y A fiction is complete C. Orders for replacements of worn out Idiscarded materials from the JPaperbacks and EJ Paperbacks are being prepared in anticipation of the heavy usage in these sections over the summer. D. Children's Clerk, Kelly Olson submitted the following report on the status of out magazine collection: The magazine shift project has been completed for all adult, young adult, and children's titles. Our complete listings of titles have been updated as well. The three titles I reported last month have resumed service with the exception of Bon Appetit. I have sent another request for information in regards to this title to our customer service representative. PROJECTS A. Preparations are underway for a Seussenntenial Celebration to be held March 2 from 3 :30 to 5 in the Children's Department. Staff has prepared The Lorax as a puppet play, craft activities, games and filmstrips of Seuss' s books. B. I am preparing for the Spring Storytime session. This is the first time that the library has offered a 6-week long spring storytime. Sessions will be held each Tuesday and Wednesday morning at 10:00 am C. Children's Department staff is preparing for 2004 summer reading programs. The MELSA theme this year is "Track it Down at Your Library and features Minnesota author and artist Betsy Bowen. Program supplies have been purchased. Staff is making plans for a fishing pond (North Woods Lake) and a Bear Cave, along with a Reading Tent for those summer relaxing reads in the library. D. The teen reading program has gone metro-wide; as a result Columbia Heights and Anoka County have retired the LIBRA title. This year's theme for teen reading will be "Gear Up at the Library". Plans are underway for programs and incentives to promote this year's theme. Caribeaners will be given to each person registering and wave pool passes will go to each teen that reads five books. In order to accommodate the 21 8t Century Grant requirements for hard statistical data, Columbia Heights will be attempting to count the number of times each registrant uses the library over the time frame of the program. We currently tally statistics of grade level and school. We will not have sufficient funding for the Program Aide in 2004. We will be relying on volunteers to fill the void. This will require that staff manage the registration of the "Gear Up at the Library" program. E. We will be offering another American Girl Program in 2004. This year's featured American Girl is Samantha. Again, due to the loss of the Program Aide position, staff will be absorbing the preparations for this program. I have begun planning for the menu and crafts. The date for this event is set for August 17 at 2:00 pm. Registration will be limited to 36 girls. IV. MEETINGS A. On February 12, at the request of the ECFE's Family Literacy program, I conducted a storytime for 42 people (23 children and 19 adults) at the Family Center CHHS. The program was well received. I involved a section on modeling reading to young children and then the presentation of an official storytime. A large percentage of the group did not speak English as their first language. B. On February 24, I attended a MELSA workshop at the Westcott Library in Dakota County. The workshop provided training on the upcoming Summer Reading Program. It was invaluable in that it saved numerous hours of searching for materials to compile booklists, activities to aide in promoting the program, and suggestions for storytime themes and activities. V. STAFF A. Pages have been repairing and weeding the boardbook collection, preparing materials for Seussenntenial B. Library Clerk, Kelly Olson prepared for and conducted two storytime sessions this month in lieu of the Children's Librarian's absence. Kelly also completed the magazine shift and update of the magazine listing, she received several large book orders, completed the state annual report statistical graphs, and concluded the statistical data collection for the 2003 fiscal year. C. Cristy Tombarge, Library Aide, continued working on a program for presentation at local schools, aided in the processing and preparation of this month's bulk loan, printed the newsletter and a number of flyers, and completed the inventory of the Storytime Materials.
