Operational Report, December 2003
December 31, 2003
I. PROGRAMS:
A. Friends of the Library: The Friends met on Monday, December 1, at 1:00 p.m. in the Library
Boardroom. Treasurer, Gloria Tarmann reported that the Friends received $405.00 from the
Bridge Marathon. I gave an update on the upcoming Library's 75th Anniversary/Birthday party
which included reviewing the volunteer schedule. The Friends requested that their membership
brochure be sent with the January Library newsletter. Nancy Rathbun will bring the Project
Bookshelf books to SACA on December 15th. 73 books were donated for Project Bookshelf.
B. At home service: I had one request for "At Home Service", and it was delivered by Connie
Carlson.
C. Bulk Loans: I selected, processed, and delivered bulk loans on Wednesday, December 3rd to
Parkview Villa, Heights Manor and Royce Place.
II. COLLECTION:
A. I ordered several books on tape, which have been received and added to the library's collection.
III. PROEJCTS & GOALS:
A. 75th Anniversary Celebration: I produced a commemorative edition of the Library Sampler that
featured a photo collage and history of the Library. One hundred copies were printed in color
with the rest done in black and white. At the celebration, I supervised the Friend's volunteers and
helped out wherever I was needed. I also made arrangements with Mary Guy to interview
patrons for a video production of the celebration.
B. Book display: This month's book display featured books of holiday recipes including recipes for
cookies, party foods, and dinners.
C. "Introduction to the Library" class: On December 17, I had three participants in my class to learn
to use the library's on-line catalog. The patrons were eager learners and very enthusiastic. The
next class is scheduled for January 21.
D. Adult Reading Program: I am in the process of organizing and preparing the reading log, book
review, registration, and entry forms for the Adult Reading Program. I ordered prizes from Selco
through their "Hot Reads for Cold Nights" program and Upstart. The program will run from
Tuesday, January 20t\ through Saturday, February 28. This year, a record will be kept of the
number of books read during the program. I have been working on a booklist entitled: If you like
the Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown try these. Several of the titles from this booklist will be
included in the January Sampler.
E. Bulletin Board: The lobby bulletin board is decorated with the theme: Snow Better Time to
Read and features snowmen in various poses with snow related book covers.
F. Tax forms: I ordered Minnesota tax forms and have received some of the Federal forms and
booklets. I ordered a portable desk file for displaying the forms.
G. Volunteers: Volunteers donated two hours of time this month; one hour shelf reading and one-
hour delivering books to the homebound.
H. Fidelity Cleaners: I called Mitch Bauman because the paper can in the women's room was not
emptied one evening and smelled badly. The situation was remedied. The cleaner is still not
working up to standard, and I need to leave notes to remind him to perform daily routine tasks.
I. Maintenance items: On Friday, December 26t\ I cleaned the air filters on the security system and
changed the air fresheners in the rest rooms.
