COLLECTION
A. BWI standing order updates were completed this month. Children's Clerk, Kelly Olson
will be notifying BWI of changes in the first of December.
B. Our paperback Y A nonfiction, graphic novels, humorous paperbacks, Juvenile non-
fiction and oversized paperbacks received shelf designation labels. We have established
two separate sections (Y A and J) for paperbacks in these areas. Library Aide, Cristy
Tombarge, and Clerk Kelly Olson completed the labeling project with the help of the
pages.
C. I am awaiting word from Anoka County regarding the cataloging of the easy CD
collection I purchased in late October. Since this is a change in format from the
audiocassettes and book combos, I believe a new material code and call number will have
to be established, unless we separate the CD's from the books and enter them
individually into the database.
D. Final book orders for this year have been placed. I am preparing the first 2004 book
order. I expect it will be large.
E. Children' Clerk Kelly Olson reported the following status of magazines for November:
EBSCO has received our Renewal Checklist. We have received the invoice for our
holdings. I plan to take a closer look at the invoice, double-checking title numbers and
extension dates. We had a couple of problems with missing magazines this month:
Time and Seventeen. These were not delivery problems, but theft. I have placed agency
requests on these titles in the hopes that they will turn up.
III. OUTREACH
A. World of Opportunities in Technology for Parent and Child, a collaborative
between Columbia Heights School District 13 and Columbia Heights Public
Library was held on November 17. The workshop was aimed at introducing
parents and children to the Library's WEB site. The first forty five minutes of
the program consisted of an introduction to the WEB site including instructions
on accessing the site, searching for materials (easy search and advanced), Internet
site links, on-line databases and placing requests for materials and accessing a
patron's record. Comments from the group following the session were very
favorable. I anticipate that we will be asked to do this program again in the
spnng.
IVPROJECTS
A. Final preparations are underway for the Library's 75th Birthday party. Storyteller
Bob Gasch will be here at 4 and 7 pm to give his interpretation of tales taken from
Columbia Heights history, Classical Guitarist, Jerry George will provide music
for the event from 4 to 7 pm, cake and cider will be served throughout the day
following the official cake cutting by Mayor Julienne Wyckoff, and children will
be treated to magic tricks provided by David Taylor along with face painting and
balloons. Thanks to Anoka County Library and the use of their Ellison Die
machine, 1400 people will receive complimentary red wagon static clings along
with commemorative bookmarks and a chance at some great door prizes donated
by area businesses.
B. We will be hosting a meeting of the Children's Librarians and Storytellers from around
Anoka County on December 16. This is an annual meeting for the purpose of sharing
new books and materials in preparation for the upcoming year of storytelling sessions.
Weare in the process of compiling a listing of all storytelling materials including puppets
and book props to be included as part of a countywide listing available to all storytellers.
I hope to have this ready for the December 16 meeting.
IV. STAFF
A. Library pages have been busy with preparations for the upcoming birthday celebration.
They have folded brochures, aided in the preparation of numerous displays, relabeled
shelving units, and processed bulk loans.
B. Library Clerk, Cristy Tombarge, established a new author display within the department,
updated the Library's slide show, established a holiday book display, aided in the
preparation of centerpieces for the birthday celebration and provided our storytime kids
with activity sheets to take home following each session.
C. Library Clerk, Kelly Olson, began entering newspapers in acquisitions, received books,
developed brochures for use by the Columbia Heights Library Foundation, aided in
preparation of numerous flyers, brochures, and booklists for the birthday celebration, and
developed a poster for the Sister City organization.
