October operational report

I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE
A. Heights Electric replaced two ballasts in the Adult Reading Room 10/1.
B. The elevator door lock stuck 10/2 and trapped a young boy inside for about ten minutes.
The Fire Department responded. Schindler adjusted the lock 10/3.
C. Public Works picked up all the spent fluorescent bulbs 10/3 to take to the recycling center
for disposal.
D. Honeywell adjusted the boiler and turned off the air conditioning 10/3.
E. A new flag cord and lockbox were installed on the flagpole 10/8.
F. Orkin performed routine maintenance in the building 10/16.
G. The windows were cleaned 10/21.
II. COLLECTION
A. A final compact disc order has been placed. All 2003 money has been expended.
B. Two DVD and two video orders have been placed.
C. The adult 600 weeding project has been completed. This area is targeted for collection
development in 2004.
D. An adult paperback order was placed.
E. An order of paperbacks and hardcovers by contemporary Black Authors was placed. A
booklist and display of these materials will be featured in a future month.
F. The Christian Science Monitor subscription was cancelled for 2004.
G. The subscription to the Minneapolis Star/Tribune on microfilm has been cancelled for 2004.
H. Mr. Jeff Smith, owner of the local MacDonald's, borrowed eight photos from the Columbia
Heights local history file to enlarge and to hang in his restaurant.
III. EQUIPMENT
A. The new departmental copier was delivered 10/17. The new coin-op copier is on backorder.
B. The discharge terminal in the workroom had to be taken in for repair 10/27.
IV. PROGRAMS
A. The bulk loans were delivered to the high rises 10/1.
B. On 10/1 Marsha was a guest at a party at Valley View Elementary to celebrate student
participation in summer reading club.
C. The local 4- H Club put up a display in the Children's Department for the month of October.
D. The Friends met 10/6 at Keys Cafe.
E. Eight sessions of preschool storytime were held during the month.

F. The Foundation Board met 10/7 with the Library Board to turn over the operation of the
Foundation to the new Board.
G. Dolores Strand accepted the Patron of the Month certificate on behalf of the Columbia
Heights/Lomianki Sister Cities International group 10/14.
H. The new Foundation Board met for the first time 10/22.
I. Two classes for adults on using the Web Catalog were held during the month.
1. Teen Read week was celebrated 10/19 - 10/25.
K. The Library Board attended a special presentation by Community Development Director
Bob Streetar 10/14.
L. The bulk loan to the schools was delivered 10/23.
V. AUTOMATED CIRCULATION SYSTEM
A. No changes.
VI. STAFF
A. Becky attended the LOC meeting at the County 10/2.
B. Becky attended the Public Service meeting 10/9.
C. Marsha attended the Children's Services Meeting 10/21.
D. Jeanine celebrated her 1 ih anniversary as a City employee.
E. Jeanine participated in a cable shoot 10/30.
VII. MISC
A. An intoxicated man had to be removed from the Library 10/2 and transported to de-tox.
B. A MELSA crossover survey was conducted 10/8.
C. Staff judged the fire posters 10/17.
D. Katie Landwehr's Girl Scout Troop cleaned shelves in the East Room 10/23 as part of a
project for "Make a Difference Day."
E. Five Library staff participated in the City's "Make a Difference Day" project by making
birthday bags for distribution by SACA.
F. Projects in process:
