II. COLLECTION
A. J Fiction inventory continues through the month of October. I had anticipated having this project
completed by the end of September but had to extend the deadline due to some difficulties
encountered in requesting items already in circulation and staff shortages. The project should be
finished by the end of October. There are a large number of items from this section that are
charged/assumed lost. Unfortunately, that means many of our popular titles are not currently
available for circulation. As a result I think this section should be earmarked for collection
development in the near future.
R I placed two orders for CD's and audiocassettes over the summer, we have received all of the
titles placed directly through Listening Library but are still waiting on titles placed through BWI
and Westin Woods. Due to the slow turn around time, I am recommending that we establish a
2004 CD budget line with sufficient funds to allow the children's department to purchase CD's
(books on CD) through Listening Library's standing order program. As a part of this program
we would receive 4 to 6 titles each month in CD format, and a lifetime replacement policy for
the items purchased.
C. I recommended to the Director dropping approximately six to eight magazine titles from our
children's and Y A collection and replacing the subscriptions with newer up-to date titles.
D. Library Clerk, Kelly Olson submitted the following report regarding the magazine collection:
I had to file two claims this month through EBSCO. We were missing September issues for Dog
Fancy and Sports Illustrated for Kids, but have received October issues from those titles. We are
also still waiting for our Renewal Checklist. I had contacted them on September 4 and was told
it would be coming soon. We were set up for EBSCONET this month. EBSCONET is an
electronic subscription system that allows us to search for titles and make claims on-line.
III. PROJECTS
A. Storytime is scheduled to begin the week of October 7. To date we have 21 registrations for our
Tuesday morning Storytime and 7 registrations for the Wednesday morning session. We will
also be offering an after school storytime for K-3 children. This Drop-in Storytime does not
require registration.
B. The library is sponsoring a Poetry Jam as a part of Teen Read Week in October. Flyers are
available now explaining the rules of the event. Students in grades 6 thru 12 are invited to
present their own poetry or their favorite authors. A panel of five judges will determine winners.
C. Plans for the 75th Birthday Celebration are well underway. Invitations and advertising flyers
have been designed, mailing lists have been updated, estimates for printing costs are in, and
plans for food, giveaways, entertainment and decorations are well underway.
IV. STAFF
A. Children's department staff (pages) aided in the J fiction inventory, mending of easy materials,
mending of J fiction, preparing order cards for book orders and processed new books. The
library pages also prepared the first bulk loan of the season.
B. Library Aide, Cristy Tombarge, prepared a display of "going back to school" titles that was very
popular with the new kindergarten set. Cristy also aided in the inventory, printed the Sampler
and numerous forms. She updated the library's 75th anniversary power point presentation and
updated the library's contact lists and mailing lists.
C. Library Clerk, Kelly Olson, prepared advertising materials for Poetry Jam, Preschool Storytime,
Drop-In Storytime and prepared copy for a new booklist "Startin School". Kelly was aided in
the preparation of this booklist by library page Alicia Cermak. Alicia is responsible for the
design and layout. Kelly also prepared the 75th birthday party invitations and flyers. She sent
and received two to three book orders this month and aided the librarian in preparing materials
for bulk loan to local schools.
