Rebecca Loader, Library Director SUBJECT: September operational report DATE: September 30, 2003 I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE A. Orkin came out 9/5 in response to a large quantity of black beetles found in the basement. The serviceperson set traps in various locations. B. Mary and Becky conducted a walk-through with Fidelity Cleaners 9/11. C. Honeywell cleaned the boiler 9/22 and prepared the HV AC for the winter season. D. The windows were cleaned 9/23. E. Fidelity replaced the cleaning chemicals 9/24 with a new "green" product. F. The exterior flag was replaced 9/24. II. COLLECTION A. Marsha met with Jack Kubbitz, Children's Press representative 9/16. B. The large print rotation among the libraries in the County occurred 9/24. C. The fiction weeding project is proceeding slowly. Becky is about one third through weeding the adult 600's. D. Two large book orders were received. Orders of cd's, audio cassettes, and DVD's were also received. III. EQUIPMENT A. Becky and Mindy have attended several meetings concerning replacement of the departmental copier. No decision has been reached yet as the purchase is being combined with Public Works and Administration to receive the best cost break. B. Becky, Jeanine, Jean Kuehn, and Linda Magee attended a demo by Alpha Video 9/9. The new Scala equipment will have a software modification so that Jeanine will have visual access to the updates she prepares. C. Work continues on replacement of the public-use copier. IV. PROGRAMS A. The Library Board met 9/2 with 5 members in attendance. The Foundation Board met 9/2 with 5 members present. B. The bulk loans to the high rises were delivered 9/3. C. The Friends met 9/8 with eight members present. D. The ICS classes visited the Library for their first scheduled times during the week of 9/8. Eight classes signed up to come for 30-minute sessions once a month. E. Marsha and Mary Caven met 9/16 to judge bookmarks from the recent contest. F. The bulk loan to the schools was delivered 9/25. G. The Library Board met 9/29 right before the scheduled 2004 budget hearing with the City Council. H. The local Sister Cities group put up a display for Polish/American Month 9/30. I. Becky sent a copy of Minnesota: our heritage with members of the local Sister Cities group to deliver to the Lomianki, Poland, public library this month The Lomianki Library staff has corresponded with the Columbia Heights Public Library staff for several years. 1. Plans for the 12/3 "It's Our Birthday!" open house are progressing. Becky has requested half of the front page of the City's newsletter for a special article. V. AUTOMATED CIRCULATION SYSTEM A. The laser reader on the workroom pc stopped working 9/4. Al installed the "spare", and Mindy sent the broken one in to be repaired. B. Al installed the service pac updates 9/10. VI. STAFF A. Becky met 9/4 and 9/25 with the committee working on the Anoka County Library Technology Plan. The plan is due to the Library Board in December. B. September greeted Mary's 25th service anniversary at the City. C. Cristy and Becky worked on the 75th Anniversary slide show 9/16. D. Becky attended GroupWise 6.5 training 9/22. E. Jeanine participated in a cable shoot 9/25. F. Marsha attended the Summer Reading Club wrap-up meeting 9/30 at NorthtoWll. G. Becky and Board President Barbara Miller have scheduled an organizational, informational meeting for new Foundation Board members on 10/7. The Library Board is getting close to turning over their Foundation Board seats to the new people. VII. MISC A. B. C. D. E. F. G. H. Projects in process: a. Departmental copier replacement. b. Public-use copier replacement. c. Anoka County Library Technology Plan revision. d. Columbia Heights Public Library Technology Plan revision. e. Replacement of lighting fixtures in Adult Reading Room. f. "It's Our Birthday!" open house 12/3/03. Delivery switched to Tuesday- Thursday-Saturday 9/2. A MELSA crossover survey was conducted 9/5. A County Tax Assessor visited the Library 9/5. In September, Dennis Shanley retired from the Anoka County Library system after 36 years of public library service in the County and at Anoka Public Library. Chad Lubbers, Centennial Branch Librarian, has joined the Carver County Library system as branch manager of their new Chanhassen branch. Bev Flaherty, Director of the Anoka County Library, celebrated her 30th year of service in the Anoka County Library system. Saturday hours changed 9/6 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. 2 VIII.
