I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE
A. Honeywell performed routine maintenance on the HV AC 8/8.
B. Schindler performed routine maintenance on the elevator 8/15.
C. Honeywell replaced the HV AC filters 8/25.
II. COLLECTION
A. Six empty video cases and two empty DVD cases were found on the shelves 8/6. A service
call was placed for the 3M security system gates. A technician "tuned up" the antenna range
8/7. He also suggested moving the planters full of silk flowers whose metal stems can
interfere with the system's operation.
B. The standing order for the Mobil travel guide series was changed to reflect the split of four
of the titles into eight.
C. The basic Chilton Repair Manuals have ceased publication. Staff will be considering how to
replace these volumes in the collection.
III. EQUIPMENT
A. The last demonstration on potential copier replacements took place the week of 8/4. The
Library, Public Works, and Administration are all looking at copier replacements in fiscal
year 2003. Mindy and Becky attended two meetings with representatives from these two
departments to explore any cost savings in purchase and maintenance contracts. A selection
should be finalized early in September.
B. The 3M-security system required a maintenance call 8/7.
C. The AS 400, which runs the City's accounting and financial programs, was down for three
days 8/13-8/15 for maintenance.
D. The list of items for the City auction was prepared. The old video camera was transferred to
the Cable program for use as a back up.
IV. PROGRAMS
A. The Library Board met 8/5 with four members present.
B. The Library Foundation Board met 8/5 with four members present.
C. The American Girl program for 2003 was entitled "A Garden Party with Kit." Special
thanks go to Kay Stickler for playing the role of Columbia Heights Public Library librarian
Lucille Hawkins at the spur of the moment. The program was enjoyed by all.
D. The new teachers in Independent School District # 13 stopped at the Library 8/21 as part of
their orientation tour. Becky and Marsha conducted a tour and short presentation to the 34
new teaching staff.
E. The bulk loans were delivered to the high rises 8/6.
F. The Columbia Heights Public Library Board of Trustees recognized the volunteers at a
ceremony 8/27. Catherine Vesley and Patricia Sowada from the Board presented the awards.
V. AUTOMATED CIRCULATION SYSTEM
A. The hard drive in the NT server, which runs the ACS, started to fail 8/20. Al replaced the
hard drive 8/21, and staff was able to use gerry-rigged terminals for charge/discharge while
he was rebuilding the server. The system was totally restored by 3:30 p.rn.
VI. STAFF
A. Becky met with Peggy Riha and Chad Lubbers to work on updating the ACL Technology
Plan on 8/5 and 8/21.
B. Becky attended the County Library Operations Council meeting 8/7.
C. Jenny Niznick and Beth Gilles both celebrated their 24-month anniversaries as Library
Pages during August.
D. Jeanine attended Scala training 8/19.
E. Becky and Marsha met with the pages 8/20 to negotiate fall schedule.
F. Becky met with Kelli Fox, new Gale representative, 8/26.
G. Marsha made a presentation on library services at the Immaculate Conception School
teacher orientation 8/26.
H. Jeanine participated in a cable shoot 8/27.
I. Becky met with Mark Trunzo, Baker & Taylor representative, 8/27.
1. Becky met with Aleksandr Chrenin and Paul Grosse, the City's IS staff, about the updated
Technology Plan 8/28.
VII. MISC
A. An attempted theft of four cookbooks was thwarted 8/13.
B. A MELSA survey was conducted 8/16.
C. F or the first time, staff attended the Anoka County Library Staff Development Day 8/22.
Eight staff members were able to participate at the all-day session held at Bunker Hills
Activity Center. Staff appreciated the opportunity to meet the people who work at the
Anoka County Library and to participate in the training sessions.
D. The Minneapolis Public Library and Scott County Public Library were closed from 8/25 -
9/2. The Columbia Heights Public Library was listed on the brochure of open public
libraries distributed by Minneapolis Public. Use statistics for that week will reflect an influx
of users from MPLIC.
