HomeMy WebLinkAboutOperational Report from Marsha To: M. Rebecca Loader, Library Director From: Marsha Tubbs, Children's Librarian Subject: July 2003 operational report Date: 7/29/03 I. Programs A. Summer Reading Fun registration totals are at 524 as of July 29. These figures are down from previous years probably due to the 5th grade count being moved into LIBRA. B. LIBRA, the Teen Reading program has registration totals of 166 as of July 29. This is average for this program. Comparing registration statistics for the past 4 years within the Libra program presents some challenges as the age for registration has shifted each year.. We began this program including 4th graders and up and four years later are including 6th graders and beyond. I think it is safe to say the program is a success if we have managed to maintain our registration counts as this would mean the initial 4th graders have stayed with the program. I plan to have a grade by grade comparison in time for my August report. C. Collection A. Magazines Children's Clerk Typist Kelly Olson submitted the following report on the status of Magazines: July has been afairly quiet month asfar as the magazines. We had our June 30,2003 issue of Newsweek stolen from the display case. I requested a copy from the missing issue bank, but there were no copies available. We are now current on Consumer Reports. This is a title that we pay for three copies of, circulating two copies and retaining one copy for reference. We have at least one copy of all months, with three copies starting in the month of May. Magazine labels have been removed from the display racks and new labels put up. B. I continue to order new titles from Baker and Taylor weekly. The last two orders have not been entered in the catalog as of yet due to staff vacation schedules but I anticipate they will be there within the week. III. Proj ects A. Kit's Garden Party The 2003 American Girl party, Kit's Garden Party, is scheduled for August 13 . We have 48 girls registered for this event. Kit's book series covers the depression era and as this is the Library's 75th anniversary year, Kit's program will emphasize the beginnings of the Columbia Heights Public Library as well. Lucile Hawkins, Columbia Heights Librarian from 1930, will serve tea. Crafts and conversation will include anecdotes regarding the depression era and Library history. B. Staff is preparing for fall programs which will include: School open house(s), Storytime, Poetry Jam (s), Class Visits, Teen Read Week and National Children's Book Week. All fall programs will lead up to the Library's community celebration of 75 years of service slated for the first week in December. C. Volunteers The Library had an exceptional group of volunteers this year. A total of twenty volunteers, aided in summer children's programs, provided tax aid to the public, participated in the Jamboree parade, registered over 700 children for reading clubs, greeted the public at a variety of open houses and fundraisers and participated in an adopt a shelf program. Plans are underway to recognize their contributions on August 2ih. D. As a part of the LIBRA summer reading program, Teens were encouraged to enter a Bookmark design contest. Twenty-two entries have been received here at Columbia Heights as a part of this program. Thirteen entries met the final requirements and will be on display in the department from August 4 through August 15. The public is encouraged to vote on their favorite entry during that time. The entry receiving the largest number of votes will compete on the county level for final judging. The grand prizewinner will have his or her bookmark design professionally printed and distributed countywide during the month of October. IV. Staff A. Children's Department staff has completed the mending project for easy materials and is beginning a JFIC mending project. B. Library Aide Cristy Tombarge aided in preparations for the American Girl program, Bulletin Board preparations for the LIBRA voting display and continued preparations for the Y A booklists. C. Children's Department Clerk Kelly Olson continued with the updates to the magazine collection, sent and received six book orders in July, prepared final copy of the Sampler and prepared final copy of the Citywide newsletter
