Rebecca Loader, Library Director SUBJECT: June operational report DATE: June 30, 2003 I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE A. The exterior windows were cleaned 6/5. B. Honeywell performed routine maintenance on the rooftop HV AC units 6/12. C. The blinds were cleaned 6/19. D. Public Works spruced up the Library's yard for the Jamboree. II. COLLECTION A. Videos, cd's (music & spoken word), audio cassettes (spoken word), and DVD's were ordered. B. Two large paperback orders were received. C. The adult fiction weeding project is complete through the letter A. D. A large print order of adult fiction and non-fiction materials has been submitted. It includes a copy of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. III. EQUIPMENT A. A new 3M bookcheck 955 desensitizer/sensitizer was purchased and installed. B. Mindy has arranged for demonstrations on seven different copiers, which are being considered for replacement of the Library's departmental copier. Demos will start the week of 6/23. C. The automatic door opener was repaired 6/12. D. One of the Internet browser monitors had to be replaced 6/11. E. The paper catcher on the Toshiba copier was replaced 6/9. F. A new pc was installed at Kelly's workstation 6/6. G. The Mita copier needed a repair 6/9. IV. PROGRAMS A. The Friends met 6/2 with seven members present. They will not meet in July and August. B. Kelly and Marsha visited the elementary schools 6/3, 6/4, and 6/5 to promote summer reading clubs and programs at the Library. C. The Board met 6/3 with 4 members present. D. The Foundation Board met 6/3 with 4 members present. E. The bulk loan was delivered to the high rises 6/4. F. A group of teens from Fridley Middle School toured the Library 6/4. G. An English as a Second Language class with 12 members came to the Library for a fieldtrip 6/5. H. Funtimes were held on 6/12 (Magic & Magicians), 6/19 (Space Explorers), and 6/26 (Art and Artists). I. The Science Museum presented two programs 6/17 on "Inventions: Exploring Bright Ideas." 1. Dazzling Dave performed his yo-yo show 6/24. K. Lomianki, Poland is the Sister City of Columbia Heights, and the local Sister Cities organization brought six honored guests from Lomianki to participate in the Jamboree Celebration. They toured the Library 6/27 and were greeted by the staff and the Library Board. Catherine Vesley presented them with a painting of the Heights Theatre to be hung in the Lomianki library. L. Two groups of students from Central Middle School came to the library 6/30 for an introduction to reading materials appropriate to their skill levels. V. AUTOMATED CIRCULATION SYSTEM A. The main floor discharge terminal (COH13) experienced problems off and on over the month. Al has it up and running again. VI. STAFF A. All part-time staff have been issued official City i.d. badges to wear during their scheduled work time. Beginning July 1, all City employees must wear their i.d. badges while at work. B. Becky attended a refresher Laserfiche class 6/2. C. Becky attended the Library Operations Council meeting at the County 6/5. D. This spring the staff includes three graduates: Dan Kleinfehn (De La Salle), Jenna Stromquist (Columbia Heights High School) and Cristy Tombarge (St. Paul College). They were honored at a staff breakfast 6/10. The graduate breakfast is a tradition at the Library that pre-dates 1974. E. Marsha met with BWI representative John Grassely 6/11. F. 6/12 Becky, Marsha, and four Library Board members attended the open house on the proposed K-Mart site development. G. On 6/23 Marsha attended the City Council budget work session in Becky's place. H. Jeanine participated in a cable shoot 6/25. VII. MISC A. The preparation of the proposed 2004 Library budget consumed a large portion of staff time over the month. The changes brought about by new legislation passed in 2003 and the reductions in Local Government Aid have required numerous revisions and re-calculations. By Charter, staff must present the proposed budget to the City Council at their first meeting in August. B. The Library Board has completed their review of half of the Library Policy Manual. C. Saturday hours changed to 10:00 a.ill. to 2:00 p.ill. on 6/7. D. A MELSA crossover survey was conducted 6/17.
