March operational report

I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE
A. The Library building underwent an insurance inspection by the League on 3/12.
B. The Library had a Fire/Public Safety inspection 3/3. Two minor violations have been
corrected.
C. The windows were cleaned 3/14.
D. Public Works removed graffiti from the men's restroom 3/18.
II. COLLECTION
A. Orders for paperbacks and hardcover books were placed.
B. The first DVD's were entered in to the database. These circulate heavily and are in great
demand by the patrons.
III. EQUIPMENT
A. The main floor Internet browser crashed 3/11. Thanks to Al Rautio, who had to wipe the
hard drive and start over, it was back up 3/12.
B. The paperback racks purchased by the Friends have been received and installed. Public
Works mounted the new slat wall in the Y A hallway and assembled the rack for the DVD's.
The paperbacks will all be shifted and the racks re-Iabeled.
C. The UPS connected to the building's computer network was replaced 3/14. Thanks to
Aleksandr, Paul, and Al for making this a smooth transition.
D. The Mita copier had a new roller installed 3/7 and a spring replaced 3/14.
IV. PROGRAMS
A. With Governor Pawlenty's unallotment, the after-school enrichment grant (CHASE), which
funded a summer aide position at the Library, has been eliminated. Alternative funding
sources to preserve the two programs included in the grant, LIBRA and American Girl, are
being explored.
B. The "Read Across Heights" posters were used on the bulletin boards on both floors of the
Library. Public response to them has been very positive.
C. Three sessions of storytime were held on 3/4,3/11, and 3/18.
D. The Friends met 3/3 with 10 members present.
E. The Library Board met 3/4 with all members present.
F. The Foundation Board met 3/4 with all members present.
G. The bulk loan to the senior citizen high rises was delivered 3/5.
H. The bulk loan to the schools was delivered 3/6.
I. The Immaculate Conception School classes visited the Library the week of 3/1 0-3/14.
1. An English as a Second Language class toured the Library 3/17.
K. Marsha, Cristy, and Kelly attended Kindergarten round-ups at Valley View, Highland, and
North Park on 3/18,3/19, and 3/20 respectively. They registered children for library cards
and presented information on services available.
L. Kelly and Marsha presented poetry programs at the schools 3/12 and 3/19 to promote
National Poetry Month.
V. AUTOMATED CIRCULATION SYSTEM
A. The pc in the workroom malfunctioned due to a defective port. Al switched it over to a
working port in the hub.
VI. STAFF
A. Becky attended five budget-related meetings in March.
B. Mary attended the Safety Committee meeting 3/25.
C. Jeanine participated in a cable shoot 3/27.
D. Marsha attended a LIBRA meeting 3/27.
VII. MISC
A. The most time-consuming project of the month has been dealing with the State's financial
situation and how it will affect local spending. Three different scenarios have been prepared
by the various departments for submission to the City Manager, and an informational
proposal has been compiled for the City Council. The Council will be considering the
alternatives at a work session.
B. Debra Patrin, IRS employee, has volunteered 9Vz hours at the Library during March to assist
with keeping the income tax forms in order.
C. A MELSA crossover survey was conducted 3/24.
