We have been collecting valentines from children to forward to authors all month. Some of the Valentine messages are priceless: "To: Dr Seuss You write the Best Books, Love Monica" "To: Nancy Springer Nancy, 1 really enjoyed Sky Rider it is one of the best books 1 have ever read. 1 have told all my friends about it. " "To: Laura Ingalls Wilder 1 only wish you were alive so 1 could meet you! 1 love learning and reading about you" "To: Mary Pope Osborne Your Books are great! Never stop writing" "To: Michael Dahl Wonderful Books! 1 love your mysteries!" "To: Robert Jordan "My Friends and 1 love your book. We drive other kids crazy when we talk about it at lunch. Keep Writing!" "To: Marc Brown Your books are easy to read and they are funny!" "To: Tony Abbott Your books are exciting" "To: JK. Rowling How do they make himfly on a broom... From Patrick" Just a sampling of the valentines we received. What a fun project. B. Read Across Heights is well underway for March. I spent three mornings the end of February taking pictures of Teachers, School Administrators etc. to feature in our Read Across Heights campaign. The photos turned out well and will be a part of the display in the children's department next month. In addition to the display all children k through 5 will be asked to submit their favorite book title to District 13 teachers between March 1 and March 15. The Children's Department is going to create booklists giving the Kids Top Picks in Heights for grades K through 5. We will provide master copies to the schools for reproduction. This was a great project It went a long way toward creating good public relations between the Library and a variety of community resources. I plan continuing this promotion into April to coincide with National Library Week. B. Our first Birthday celebration of Storybook characters was moderately successful. We had ten children attend and 2 adults. This was an after school event scheduled for a day when school was not in session. The Storybook Character was Arthur. The children that attended were treated to stories read by Columbia Hei hts Ma or Jullienne W ckoff. Everyone had a good time. C. Two classes from Highland School made Field trips to the Library in February. Each group of 60 students arrived by bus and was treated to a 20-minute storytelling session and a 25-minute scavenger hunt within the department. The scavenger hunt was designed to introduce the students to all aspects of the Children's Department including: special collections, library catalogs, Internet browsers and media. Feedback from the teachers and students was positive and I think everyone had a good time and learned a lot about the Library. D. We continue working on the upcoming summer programming and have begun preparations for Nation Library Week" Heights Loves to Read At the Library" IV. Staff A.
